Yeah I agree, but what most people want to see is not what the BCS always gives us, that's the problem. Nonetheless, it is what it is.

I say the same thing about the 8 team playoff system. No reason that could not be put into play.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

The BCS system will always be problematic. I was the chair of the committee responsible for establishing the selection process for an Olympic Sport's Team Trials. There were always differences on how to weight various events and head to head competition. I ran simulations on many different systems, as did others on the committee, and it was complicated even for a sport with everyone competing in most of the same events. With so many teams that do not play each other, or even many of the same teams, in a season, it is virtually impossible to derive a result that will be acceptable and a system that will be robust.

The decisions are inherently political and driven by a fear of losing control and money associated with the status quo.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

Sonnie, you hit a nerve right there. If there was anytime to see why the BCS has messed things up, just look at this season. The BCS will never really know who the best college team is, until its decided on the field. To think this is the only organization that does this, makes you wonder.

Sports is played on the field, period. Not in a board room.

Supposedly President elect Obama is for a playoff system... maybe he can get congress involved and we can make it a government run system.

Yes, I heard that, its a shame if it really has to get to that level, but if he can pull it off, why not. Every other sport is determined by what goes on in the field. Why is college football any different. Its really crazy. Things that make you say Hmmm........................

Awesome team is all I can say. Those guys came to play ball and play ball they did.

IMO... they deserve to be #1.

This is indeed more fuel... more fuel for a playoff system.

As far as Bama is concerned... yeah, I would have liked to beat Florida and played for a Nat'l championship... I would have liked to beat Utah, but I said it after we were 12-0... I would be extremely happy and satisfied with a 12-2 record, and holding the #1 spot for 5 weeks... neither would I have ever expected in my wildest of dreams at the beginning of the year. A very satisfying season it was... and beating Awburn 36-0 ... wow! I certainly cannot complain.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

The Utes played great and deserve to be playing for the Championship, as do about several others. The lack of a playoff is simply inexcusable. An 8 team playoff structure integrated into the bowl system is simply to easy to do. Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Utah, Penn State, and a couple more in a playoff would draw enormous interest and TV revenue. How can the NCAA not get it?

Bama was great this year, though they did not play their best game against Utah. They should be great next year as well and I expect them to dominate the SEC west for a while. I was thrilled to see the Tigers get back on track and show the difference in what it means to lose five SEC games and be at the top of the ACC.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

Of course I think there are more problems than just the BCS. The last game of the season here was Utah vs. BYU,... now I realize that Utah is a small market, but,.....
Utah 11-0 and ranked #7
BYU 10-1 and ranked #14
Playing for the Mountain West title,.... and it was carried on which network?

I mean really,... two top 20 teams playing for the conference title and its not even on TV? WOW!
Can you imagine the uproar if it would have been, say,...
Florida vs. Alabama
Michigan vs. Ohio St.
Oklahoma vs. Nebraska
USC vs. Oregon
and no TV coverage? The "Holy War" is one of college football's oldest and most heated rivalries.
Hmmm,... yeah, more problems in college sports than just the BCS rankings.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

Mountain West just does not have the interest nationally that others have, but I agree, it deserved more attention. My point is that even in a system that is driven by perception of interest and how much money can be squeezed out of the game, the NCAA, and the networks are missing a great opportunity.

I would be livid if I was a Utah fan.

I think a Florida vs. Utah game would be interesting.

I would be livid if I was a Texas, USC, or Utah fan. I think all of these teams have as much claim to the title game as UF and Ok. It would be incredible to see an SEC team like Alabama or UF get a shot at USC.

Oh, I agree, old coach with undefeated season vs. the new coach with an undefeated season,... I'm in!
of course it would probably not be carried on any network either

Its cool that Florida won, but, is it really. What about USC? Probably thet could have beaTEN either one of these two teams.
But, its the BCS, right? No playoff structure, ruled by the Rose Bowl (Politics and money!). How is it, that every other sport is decided ON THE FIELD of play, and college footballl is not??!! This was probably the worst year for the BCS`es flawed Bowl structure. As long as it stays like this, you will NEVER REALLY TRULLY know, who the National Champion is.

Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals, etc, what is wrong with college football.

No more to be said here.

While I am happy for the Gator fans... I could not agree with you more as far as a playoff system.

Obama has been harping on it heavy... maybe he can work some magic.

It is really hard to guess, but I have wanted to see USC end up in a Championship game with an SEC team since the Tigers "split" the national title with them. There really is no excuse for not having some kind of playoff system with at least 4, and better 8 teams. The solutions are really not that hard to figure out. The silly thing is that it could bring in far more revenue with the enormous interest and viewership that it would bring.

From the viewpoint of an SEC fan (LSU Tigers and UF Gators), USC would have been the team that scared me the most in a Championship. The intensity and smart coaching that they bring to the table is hard to top, though the Gators bing it as well. The most poignant moment in this year's game, IMO, was the look on Sam Bradford's face when he threw the interception. Rather than it making him more intense and focused like it did with Tebow, he was obviously demoralized. I would not have expected that from a USC quarterback.

I hear you. Well, as far as BCS is concerned, Tim Tebow rules right now. What a shame!!

No, I meant that, yes, it is cool for Tebow and Florida. But, as I stated earlier, we still do not know, due to the current BCS mess, who the real champion is. That is all I`m saying.

My team, the Crimson Tide of Alabama, gets a new coach in Nick Saben, now the highest paid coach in college football. Will money buy us wins? We'll have to wait and see, but I'm more excited about our future than I've ever been.

I just discovered this thread, I knew there was a reason why I like you Sonnie.

I'm ready for this upcoming season. We have a couple of big losses, but some big additions (including the graduation of John Parker Wilson, I consider that an addition by subtraction) should make it a fun season.

We played Florida tough, the only game I had a problem with was the Sugar Bowl, and I would think Coach Saban will correct it come this Fall.

Its real sad how things with Andre Smith are working out though...

It is good to be an alum of LSU and a transplant to Gainesville these days. I have a lot of respect for Coach Saban and Bama, but my money is on the Gators for a while.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

Yeah... those Gators are going to be tough to deal with, no doubt.

We may still be a year or two off... and the recruiting for two years running has been phenomenal. This should begin to pay off for us this year and next. Just having Saben around seems to be a big boost for the team. He took what I would have considered just an average team last year and scored a big 12-2 record... awesome coaching indeed.

Icon... we are up against what appears to be another tough opener in the match up against Virginia Tech in Atlanta. I suppose you were at the Clemson game and will be at the VT game as well.

I am a little bit worried about what kind of quarterbacking we will have for the next few years. John Parker Wilson was probably not National Championship quality, but he was not that far from it either. He did not have the best coaching the first few years he was there. I am not familiar with what we have in QB stock that will possibly stand out for us.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

Before last season I was a big proponent of at least giving Greg McElroy more reps at QB because if I recall correctly, during the 07 season JPW was just terrible down the stretch. I think at QB we'll be ok.

I'm hoping to go to the VT game, but I don't know how its going to be financially at that point in time, but I'm sure going to try, the Clemson game was a lot of fun.

The current textbook controversy has me a little worried, I'm hoping the NCAA will be leaniant considering the administration caught them and punished them accordingly, so I hope they'll just let it be, but it could be something big.

Word going around is that Terrance Cody is coming in about 25 lbs lighter, which is a big plus for our defense and could be real big this upcoming season. And he was a beast as a freshman.
