Anemometer?

Do we have any amateur meteorologists aboard?

All this bad weather makes me want to see what the wind is doing.

I don't want a miniature weather station. I just want an anemometer which allows me to read windspeed and direction from safely indoors.

I have scanned the net for ideas but the real pro-gear is foolishly expensive and the amateur gear just looks like expensive plastic toys. The online reviews do not fill me with confidence in the cheaper toys.

I have a handheld, WindWizard windspeed indicator but I really don't want to go out and stand in the middle of a field in the pitch dark with a torch/flashlight when its blowing and raining hard.

I can easily make the mechanical bits of an anemometer and wind vane but how do I get the information it can provide indoors? Any useful ideas?

I'd go look in boating type shops as avid fishermen and sailors want to keep a keen eye on the weather before they take the boat out.

I have seen projects where people used bicycle speedometers connected to home-made anemometers to display rpm, wind velocity, max rpm, etc.
I am no weatherman, just an idea I had for my son's science project but never went through with it....err... my son never went through with it...

I consider myself an amateur meteorologist. I've had a interest in weather since I was a little kid.

I bought a weather(s) station about seven years ago and have never regretted it. My first one was a (Davis Instruments) Weather Monitor II then replaced with it the Vantage Pro Plus. It's classified as a amateur piece of equipment. And I'm sure it's WAY above want you want to pay if all your looking for is the anemometer section.

What you might want to do is check out some of the online weather forums. I can list them if you like but I don't know if it's allowed here. I can PM them to you too.
Most of those forums have "For Sale" sections and you might be able to find someone selling a old weather station cheap....and you could hook up the anemometer part by itself. Who knows, maybe you might find yourself enjoying the entire weather station.

Many thanks for the kind offers and for the information.

I have bought a professional cup anemometer online. (a Casella)

I read that the Davis gear is very good when I was doing my online homework before deciding that to do about recording the wind.

I decided that I really didn't need that level of sophistication. I already have loads of thermometers, hygrometers and barometers (and clockwork driven recording equipment). I just collect these things for fun more than use them for actually recording the weather.

I used to make my own anemometers but had no proper way of recording windspeed etc. Having been subjected to far too may storms recently I decided to take the wind more seriously now.

It's all a bit old-fashioned compared with the computer-based monitoring stations that do everything. For me the handling of the equipment is most of the fun. I like the brass and glass and wood and copper and all the past methods of recording the weather. Perhaps I'm just romanticising about it all.

Can't disagree with you there. I'm always fascinated with how things were done in the past. And love the pride and craftsmanship put into older equipment!
