Denon update

Hi all,

I have a great old Denon DRA-25 receiver that has functioned well for many years. I want to now have iphone music enabled on the system. Do I have to buy a new receiver, or is there an attachment I can use on my old system? I have seen good prices on a Denon AVR-S720W, but as we just use our system for music - no home theater - is this overkill?

Thanks for any opinions,

Re: Denon update

If you just want to plug your iPhone into your system with a wire, two solutions:

If you have an iPhone with the Lightning connector, you can use this, then adapt to your receiver with this.

If you want to go wireless with AirPlay, an Airport Express is your solution. Also consider an older model, now available for considerably less than the new current one. You'll still need a 3.5mm stereo to RCA cable, and have to set it up on your network, but they work. I have several (older) units, pretty much flawless.

However, the AVR-S720W is a really good AVR, great solution, and has AirPlay built in. Watch out for the discounted prices, they are likely not authorized Denon resellers, and you won't have a factory warranty. That model has not been out long enough for legitimate advertised discounts. However, you'll probably find great deals on the S710W now that it's been discontinued.

Gazoink(wave, haven't seen you for awhile) summed that up nicely. I use an airport express a lot for music, and it works really well. If your iPhone is not a 7, and still has a 3.5, you'll just need to go from 3.5 to stereo pair, without a lightning conversion.

Good point, I meant to say that too. The 3.5mm stereo headphone jack is an excellent audio output on just about every device these days. The only glitch is it's volume controlled and may have tone/EQ applied (if that was your choice). Both are easily handled.

Fwiw, iPhone does have an eq in the music menu(settings, not in the player)default is off but it has many presets.(I leave it off)The onkyo he player app has preset eq's by them and famous artist(ooooh!), plus you can make your own with the super clean layout.
Here's the eq screen
Squirrel....
Anyway, the other nice thing about airplay is if you're carrying your phone, you have control of the volume all the time. If you're connected by wire, you'll have to use the avr remote.(or the phone but why walk all the way up to it).
