Re: Mirror Experiments

Can we get mylar film at Michaels? When I search for it on the internet I get links which could be described as 'less than legal'. I don't want a big sheet. Just something small that I can adhere to the surface of something to spray.

Check this one out mech. They have samples you can get.

It seems to be associated with hydroponics.

Re: Mirror Experiments

I'm just wondering if I can get it locally. I'll check around tomorrow or Thursday. I would think I could get smaller pieces at Michaels. I'm not sure if the samples would do or not. I'll check Michaels first and then we'll go from there.

mechman,

You might try a Mylar balloon, should work if it doesn't have printing on one side.

Re: Mirror Experiments

I'm gonna check around some today to see what I can find. Otherwise I'm gonna take dougri up on his kind offer to send me some that he has sitting around.

Richum - For what I'm intending to do a balloon wouldn't work. I want to adhere the mylar to half of one of my 2X4 hardboard panels. Then spray the whole thing at once to see what effect the mylar really has.

Prof. - Now I just need to find a hydroponic store! There are a couple that come up in Minnesota. But none are close by. I've got a couple of fairly large greenhouses close by though so I'm gonna check there too.

You can probably get it from an online Hydroponic store..but you will have to specify that they roll it up and put it in a cylinder to post it..

Re: Mirror Experiments

I ended up driving the 20 miles to get a 4'X25'X1mil roll of it. I think that should be enough.

Has anyone adhered this stuff to anything? I'd like to cover half of each of my panels in mylar.

Re: Mirror Experiments

You might want to try reflective aluminum. MIRO-4 is 97% reflective, and it cuts out the depth issues. It's super thin, lightweight, and if you happen to have a fluorescent lighting manufacturer in your area you could probably get a sample to try for free with a little sweet-talking. They generally sell their scraps to aluminum recyclers and get a very small percentage of what they payed, so giving someone a small piece could be plausible. I managed a 1 year contract at a small national manufacturer that built a second plant here in gainesville and might be able to get my hands on some 2x4 sheets. They are generally cut to 4x8 out of the mill too. I know it's pretty expensive, but it's an option, and couldn't be worse than paying 100 dollars for a mirror. Obviously I have no idea how neutral the return would be, but it's something to consider.
