Samples from Members

Recently I have received several samples from members here at the Shack. i_am_legend sent four, Pyro2 sent a sample of his Elektra mix, and jinjuku sent 8oz of his silver fire lite. Jinjuku's measures can be found in the silver fire thread as well as several pictures. I'll put the rest here.

The spectrophotometer results:

Pyro2's Elektra:

i_am_legend Rosco Off Broadway White

i_am_legend Rosco:CSMS 2:1

i_am_legend Porter 6209 light base

i_am_legend Mystery Mix (1:1 ratio of Roscos white white, and 3d silver metallic fabric paint)

Re: Samples from Members

The Elektra mix turned out neutral, as did the Mystery Mix. Rosco's Off Broadway White proved to be a very bright white paint, as it has been described in the past.

I'll have more on these in the upcoming days. I plan on doing all of my calibration readings tonight (16+ samples ) and tomorrow, so you can expect something in the second post by the end of the week. Gain will not be until next week, along with pictures hopefully.

I should add that if you'd like the RGB and CIE Lab values, you can punch the XYZ numbers into the Lindbloom CIE Calculator. Make sure you check all three 'scale' boxes and select D65.

Thanks Mech. I kinda figured that the 2:1 rosco and CSMS was off a bit. I was going to mix it up again, just to make sure it wasn't off from my doings. I was glad to see that the Rosco and silver metallic 3D fabric paint came up neutral. Now im just hoping it doesn't hot spot. You know, a lot of attention gets placed upon black levels, and I totally understand why. I love my black levels too. But, ever since I have painted the entire screen with Roscos White White, I have come to thoroughly appreciate the value nice bright whites brings to a picture as well. With the 8500 and a light controlled room, the blacks are still very nice even on a very white screen.

It's all a matter of choice, better blacks or better whites. And Rosco's is one of the best whites I've measured.

I really don't think the Mystery Mix is going to hot spot. And it may be tough to tell because it's got quite a bit of texture. Is the texture from the fabric paint? Or did the paint just dry out a bit? I'll know more tomorrow hopefully. Too much snow fell today and I decided to shovel the driveway a second time tonight for the exercise.

And now it's time for bed.

It is a bit thicker at the 1:1 ratio, but really it could be rolled without the texture. I have made other samples and didn't get the texture. I just did a no no, and made an extra pass with a foam roller on one of the coats after it got a bit tacky.

Not sure as to the exact munsell shade of the sample I sent to you. I did try and add more fabric paint to the mix to get a darker shade, but it definitely hot spotted with the ratio needed for that. I will probably start with a darker tinted base paint to add the fabric paint to in order to try and create a darker shade while keeping the ratio of the two paints where they need to be. The nice thing about it is that I have ran over it with a wet rag, and it seems fully washable.
