Re: Sub question

"Originally built for one of the biggest names in high-end home audio"? If that's true, I wonder who it was. And I wonder why PE has them instead.

Supposedly a Legacy design with a passive radiator.

Re: Sub question

Legacy Audio? If so, the driver might be pretty nice. Those guys are renown for high quality stuff.

It's probably the older drivers used in this thing.

this is what they used to look like a few years ago, which looks the same as on PE:

Re: Sub question

That certainly looks to be the case. Good catch.

I wonder if Legacy still offers that subwoofer for sale then. Did you notice the design flaw? A down-firing passive radiator is a big no-no. A free form suspension system will sag in short order. Drivers can be engineered to combat gravity, but not passive radiators.

Has to do with the moving mass. The weights in a passive radiator can bump the Mms up to like 10 times that of the same size driver. Plus, the rule of thumb is that a PR normally has 2x the excursion of the same size of driver pushing it. So yeah twice the excursion, 10 times the mass, probably going to sag. Perhaps they're doing something that can reduce this greatly, I dunno. They've been making these like that for years so if it was an issue I imagine they'd change it.

Re: Sub question

PE has been doing factory buyouts on drivers for YEARS. This is nothing new.

Looks like a great driver for a "small" vented cabinet. Good xmax and okay Fs. Probably a great deal for the price.
