I'm building new cabinet/bookshelf built-in in my living room. I'm planning to build the subwoofer into one of the cabinets. By my current calculations I will have 4.5 ft^3. I'm thinking of using the Dayton Ultimax 12 (UM12-22). When I model it in Winisd there is a large hump, is that going to be an issue?
I guess at this point I'm looking for help deciding if I should look at a different driver or if the UM12 will be fine?
Also, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that winisd does not taking into consideration the speaker volume. If I have 4.5 ft^3 of space available, do I technically have even less since I haven't taken that into account yet?
The hump is because that box is kinda small for what is optimal on that driver.
You need to take into account speaker volume, but more importantly the port velocity and the volume the port itself takes, which will be significant for a low tune in a small box like this.
For that driver, two 4" round ports would be minimum, a larger area slot port would be better. For two 4" round ports those would be 35" long to get your 20 Hz tune with 4.5cuft net volume.
You could keep the same 4.5cuft and go sealed with a UM15 or UM18 or the new Stereo Integrity HT 18 v2
I'm open to going sealed as well. I guess the comparison I'm looking for is against what I currently have. I have two SVS PB-1000 subwoofers currently. The wife is tired of seeing them and wants something more concealed.
I mainly use the subwoofers for movies. I play lots of music but always as background music and I'm never sitting down critically listening to it. I also don't have a requirement for extreme bass, I have neighbors and the PB-1000s are plenty loud for me.
I saw someone else doing a ported Dayton RS390HO in a 4 ft^3 box I believe. Would that be a better alternative or should I really consider sealed? I'm concerned about the larger low-end drop off a sealed box when watching movies.
I'm debating on having 1 or 2 subs right now. My initial plan is to build one, test it in the room and see what I think. If I want more then I can turn the cabinets on the other side into another sub enclose.
The room is a very large room, with a entry into a kitchen. If I remember right its roughly 20'x25' or so.
Is there another driver that may work better or do you think I'm on the right track with the Daytons?
Alright so I decided to change directions... I'm going to do a single Ultimax 15" subwoofer. I think I was trying to put too much sub in a small box so I decided to stop compromising.
Box size is 8.443 tuned at 20 hz. I need help with vent sizing and anything else I might be missing? My Winisd file is attached.
