Re: Mal-X horn folded?

Okay, I get the concept of folding now (hahahaha I'm way behind the curve for this thread aren't I!). Basically I know the given length of the horn (from horn back to driver front.. in this case 25 + 458 + 102 = 585cm? plus 59 cm to the opening. This can't be right, can it? That seems far too short for a quarter wavelength... am I interpreting this program wrong or is it just that a tapper horn is different from the usual horn?

...and then my goal is to take my final goal dimensions, and fold the straight line length into something close to the final dimensions somehow... basically like a puzzle? The next goal after that is for as few gaps so we can re-use walls, right?

Here's my first attempt at just getting a feel for folding... I'll accept any criticisms, explanations on everywhere I messed up, and advice on how to do this properly.

I'm now going to go to sleep and give this another more refined go (or four) in the morning, hopefully i'll have gotten some feedback by then.

I really do like the idea of the horn shooting upwards though. It gives me an irrational solace if the 60lb driver isn't on some weird slant.

Re: Mal-X horn folded?

hey, what's up with the massive group delay spike at ~65hz, ~95hz, ~98hz and ~110hz!?

That's all within the intended passband right (especially if my plan is to cross at 80hz?) Wouldn't 100msec of group delay would be audible!? I'm doubting that EQ could help tame a group delay.. could it?

Re: Mal-X horn folded?

Okay guys, I'm going to have to bow out of this. I wanted to build a tapped horn, but time and financial constraints force me to do something simpler...sometimes zealousness gets the best of us. I'll continue to follow this thread and hopefully improve my horn folding skills but it's just not realistic for me to build one right now. Maybe next summer for me, but good luck to sub-junkie!

My System
Re: Mal-X horn folded?

I noticed someone say that Hornresp is a better program than WinISD but is that for any type of enclosure or just tapped horn subs?

I have been swamped and haven't really kept up with any new programs, should I plan on learning how to use Hornresp and is the learning curve hard?

I do want to make a TH one of these days, not sure if the neighbors would appreciate a 18" TH but I have never heard one before.

I'm going to give folding a go...but I really have no clue how to do it correctly. So if I post pictures on here with my attempts at folding, scrutinize it and let me know what needs to be changed!
To fold it, you need to have the line length and width the same as before folding it, correct?

From what I can see you need to keep the centreline length the same as an unfolded horn.
Like all speaker designs there are always compromises that can either enhance or hinder the final results.
Good luck with it.

That's some serious spl going on there. 140db at 20hz and 110db at 10hz. WoW!

I think you are defo going to have to reinforce your house mate.
