IXL 18 IB project

I have four IXL's arriving on 6/26. The IB will replace my sealed RLP15 (anyone in the market?) and will be powered by the same EP2500.

Re: IXL 18 IB project

Nice to hear from ya Jim!

Congrats on the new drivers. I wonder what you'll think of the IB in comparison to the relatively low Q sealed sub.

If you don't have a BFD for your sub, get one fast!
If you don't have REW, get it now!

Okay... the excuses for not hosting a meet are going to get less and less acceptable as the project nears the end... just remember that.

Re: IXL 18 IB project

I have a tiny house, but I think we can shoehorn in a few people for a meet. I really want to get my center and mains built first. I've been dragging my feet and haven't even started them. They are quickly becoming a priority though.

This hobby is electronic crack. You get sucked in with promises of high fidelity from tiny boxes only to develop upgraditis. Every 6 months to a year you have to up your dosage.

Then you should feel justifiable sympathy for the poor devils who have been at this lark for decades and made the tragic mistake of starting with big boxes.
Back beyond the mists of time in the last century all speaker boxes were huge! We should really be building on the scale of the pyramids by now!

Re: IXL 18 IB project

Here is the output of the IXL in a 260 litre bass reflex enclosure tuned to 17Hz. The green line is the driver, the yellow is the port. Measurements are nearfield - mic was placed one inch from driver and port. The port measurement has a 24db/oct xover applied at 100Hz for clarity.

Geoff, why don't you swing by. You can have a personal "customized" view.

Re: IXL 18 IB project

LOL!

I'm waiting on the grilles to be delivered Monday. I need them to help locate the manifolds.

Building the manifolds should go quickly. There will be two with a 14" x 20" opening.

You are in for a real shock when you fire this thing up!

Words cannot describe the sound of an IB. (though I have tried more than once)

The stupendous weight of the bass is like no other subwoofer you have ever heard.

Even at whispering levels it levels forests, empties lakes and smashes mountains together.

While all other subs can only pretend, the IB is the real thing.

This is the only high definition subwoofer to match the latest visual advances.

Enjoy!

Re: IXL 18 IB project

I met Carl Pileggi through the Cult and had a great demo at his house. It was exactly the sound that I want.

Every time I want to work on the manifolds, it's raining. I hope to have some pics posted within the next week or so.

Thanks Jim. With that much displacement available I imagine Carl's installation would sound superb.

Re: IXL 18 IB project

It really did. He also has some wonderful Klipsch speakers to go with the IB. He's going pre/pro with some Crown amps very soon. I hope to go back and demo the new setup.
