Ib in an old Fire Place

Hey I have got an old fire place in the lounge that the TV just sits in front of now. How do you think mounting the sub in there would go down?

Hi Jimmy and welcome to the Shack!

Seems like a fireplace would be an excellent choice for an IB provided you could get at least a couple of drivers mounted and could assure a good seal from front to rear.

Re: Ib in an old Fire Place

You may end up with a wierd kind of vented box, or T-line with the chimney, what are the dimentions of the firebox and chimney?

Re: Ib in an old Fire Place

Someone either at the Cult or HTGuide tried this. I haven't seen the thread recently, but last I recall he was having major problems getting an air tight seal between the baffle and brick surround.

And as Nathan says, there's a potential issue with the driver seeing the flue as a port or transmission line, depending on cross sectional area. Instinctively, I would think the flue area should approximate the Sd of the driver(s) chosen to avoid semi pressurizing the firebox and creating a lossy ported box.

How big is the firebox? Assuming you can overcome the baffle to brick sealing issue, you might could create a sealed or ported alignment by plugging the flue. Just a thought.

Re: Ib in an old Fire Place

I too have read about people doing this, but the results haven't been positive yet. Usually it acts like a poorly sealed closed box. I suppose it depends on the size of the inside of the chimney.

Re: Ib in an old Fire Place

Cheers for the tips guys. Sorry i didn't get back to you sooner about the dimensions. Have been out of town. Turns out it doesn't look like i can get high excersion drivers here anyway ( in New Zealand ). Looks like ill just have to make an army of Tuned boxes instead
