i really want to get this modeling right.....i may buy the dayton which works better in this sonosub and build the correct one for the tempest. I ll try the one voice coil but im still using 8 ohm as resistance in win ISD....is that right?

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

ok tell me if this looks right....im using the 160w (80w per coil)

Tempest X @ 500L tuned 15.4

Tempest X @ 223L tuned 15.4

Adire Audio Tempest @ 223L tuned 15.4

I just added a sealed tempest x and i gain 4db at 20 hz by going ported, so i think that is a nice little gain and way better than sealed.

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

Just for the fun of it i modeled the Infinity Kappa Perfect 12 i have in my car to see what it would do in the sonotube i built. Comparing to Tempest X in same sonotube.

Tempest X

Infinity Kappa Perfect 12

Adire Audio Tempest

Thats impressive for a 12" aint it?? It keeps up with the original tempest

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

That graph is simply FR, it does not take into account output. The 15" Tempest very likely has much higher displacement, meaning it will play at much higher output levels than the 12" Infinity.

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

ok, heres the SPL for an optimized box for the Kappa Perfect and an optimized box for the Tempest X

Infinity Kappa Perfect 12

Tempest X

I think thats impressive for a 12".........just think if infinity made a 15"!!!

Plus the 12" is only using a 121L enclosure compared to the 15" 500L enclosure

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

How much power are you feeding each sub? Where are you crossing excursion limits with each sub?

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

Im using my 160w and the xmax is reached on the 12" at around 18hz and lower

the tempest x reaches xmax at around 13hz or lower

if i imput 350w it moves the 12" to 19hz and the 15" to 14hz

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

The Tempest is capable of more, as it can take more power than you are modeling with. Drivers with less displacement, like the 12" Infinity, aren't suited to large and low tuned enclosures because they need to preserve as much efficiency as they can >20hz.

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

the tempest isnt a high power sub.....neither is the tempest x Pmax is 600w (im assuming around the 350w rms)

EDIT: ok maybe they arent stating the right wattage....i see guys putting 1400w to em i guess.

Still cant see why you dont think that 12" is doing an awesome job. Your only talking a few hz at xmax on each driver. The infinity is rated 350w rms

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

With enough enclosure and perhaps EQ manipulation, I can get any driver to stay flat to the low teens. What's the point if it can only output 100dbs though? A driver has a fixed amount of displacement, and if it that isn't a whole lot, it's not wise to try and shift some of its usage into the subsonic range because it needs all it can muster >20hz. With a high excursion 15" or 18" driver however, it will already have enough output capability >20hz that few would gain much from trying to increase capability in that range further, so instead, we shift some of that displacement usage into the low end.

Simply put, the 12" isn't doing an awesome job because it would bottom out in that design all day long at moderate listening levels.

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

I understand the 15" is better, im just sayin thats an impressive 12"

Am i doing the modeling correctly? Do they match what your graphs say if you imput the same specs?

Thats what im really after, is if im doing it right.

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

Your graphs look good, they are comparable to what I've modelled for those 2 subs. As for the Infinity Kappa Perfect 12 sub, it models very close to the Adire Shiva Mark 3, which I have 2 in sonotubes. They have excellent output down to 20hz and lack in output below that. For sub-20 hz output you really need a long throw 15 inch or bigger subwoofer. An example would be the last graph you posted. There is a 10 db difference between the Kappa and Tempest-X at 18 hz.

We're all in this together!

ok ill go with 36" then 15.5 is good enough
i was reading and jus wondered if you had any of the tube left over from when you cut it,and if it is enough that if reatatched you would have the length you wanted.
i dabble in wooden boat building (fiberglass-epoxy to join water tight seams) ,and if my tube was to short, and i had to, id cut the scrap to make the total length i needed from the 2 pcs, and fiberglass/epoxy it back together,, inside and out.
if you were carefull, it should be fine.

jus my 2 cents

Re: sonotube tuning......14hz??

well if its wasnt already 6" tall that might work...

I think the only way to do it would be a 24" tube.

I could make an estension peice that would look just like the woofer mount end cap. That would work....

Id have to lay it on its side though since i only have 7' 10" ceiling height. The effective volume would need a tube twice the length......so 11'....

go idea though!

It works for me the way it is.....might build another with the other half of the tube....
