4 Diy Tempest -x Or 2 Maelstroms/

Trying To Decide On Either 4 Tempest -x Or 2 Maelstroms. Modeling Seems To Show That The Tempest In An Enclosure Sized For A System Q Of .65 Has Box Res And Rolloff In The Mid Twenties. Maelstroms Show Box Res And Rolloff In The 30s. Im Thinking The 4 15s Will Be Tighter And Lower With Large Box. I Have Access To An Lt Processor That Will Help With Reducing Box Size. I Plan On Using The Face Audio Amp Offered By Diy Which Has Tons Of Power To Drive Either Senario---advise???

I think you are in for some major low end!

I would personally go with the 2x Maelstroms. Smaller boxes and fewer of them. 8cu for each Maelstrom tuned to 19hz. Or tune lower for some LLT action .

I'm pretty sure the Tempests are cheaper in terms of Vd/$, and also four Tempests should outdisplace two Maelstroms.
You are right on the Vd/$, but the difference isn't much. Looking at single driver quantities it is .0116 vs .0111 liter/$.

The thing that gets me is the enclosure size. The Maelstroms need less volume per driver then the Tempests. If you are looking for .707 the Tempest needs almost 3x the volume per driver! But oddly enough they do play lower...

Anybody modeled a true LLT for the Tempest X or new Maelstrom from DIY--looking for the ultimate HT and music playback

I modeled both of these. The Maelstrom seems just about perfect for 20Hz and up, not really LLT. 110db at 20Hz without room gain with only 300 watts! ~116db with 1000w, and it will not bottom out until 13Hz. All this in only 8cu. Only issue is the port. It would need to be 8" and 46" long which could pose some geometry problems. Pushing the box to 12cu gets a much more reasonable port length.

The Tempest's frequency response extends lower then the Maelstrom but requires a stoopid big box to reach it. I think the Tempest would be best in an IB configuration.
