I am kinda bummed that the more mature HT crowd isn't into speaker vids like the car guys, especially since all they like is ridiculous heavy motored subs under gobs of power with "low" tunings of 30-35Hz watching their cars flex, not realizing they are losing their precious deebeez by not reinforcing their vehicles to trap it all inside

What material do you use to fill the enclosure for volume changes?
I'll likely use wood blocks if I ever get around to it.

I don't have a video camera that captures a good video without blurring and I also don't have much time to edit the vids.

I know you've seen some of the youtube ones I put up of the free-air type.

Re: Sealed test enclosure

Update.

Subs in their current placement. I've only done limited REW investigation but my current response is not good. Huge 46hz peak and it riiiiings. I'm not surprised since the subs and listening position are both nearly exactly half way along the wall of the rooms longest dimension. Hopefully moving the foutan forward a bit and adding subs 3 and 4 to their locations will help smooth things out. Massive work is still needed on the room as well. New furnishings, area rugs and something is needed on the walls. Hopefully that will all help as well. I don't know what to do about the floor shake. It is fun, but almost too much and it will likely smear my measurements if I can't figure out a way to decouple the microphone from the stand and floor.

BTW. The output level is dumb already with just 2. It's plenty. 3 and 4 will just add more headroom and smooth out the response I guess. Oh well.

Re: Sealed test enclosure

Sadly I blew one of my PL9.0's the other day. I was playing WOTW's at cranked levels and I finally got the amp to clip at about -1db from reference, which is coffee table bouncing off of the floor levels. Unfortunatly that amp quickly muted and went into protection. I'm going to have to ship it to QSC for repairs. Stupid me always trying to "see what she's got".

Well it was probably dumping around 6500w on peaks in the 10-30hz range at that point.

Do you have a home sub and a receiver? It doesn't have to be anything great just something. Order War of the World's on DVD off of Ebay. It's probably less than $10 shipped. Watch it with the DTS track on and be real careful with the volume. It will make Bass I love you look not so mean anymore. If you put in any bass test track off of a cd that you can think of, it will not hold a candle to some of the stuff that comes out of the SW out jack with that movie soundtrack at the same volume level.

Re: Sealed test enclosure

I spent about 7hrs last night with one of the subs on a shop dolly investigating the room response and determining the best locations for smooth response at the listening position (front left and right corner). After I found that out I placed the first sub in the best spot (front left corner front firing) and did the same thing with the 2nd sub while still running the first looking for the spot with the best combined response (1 sub in the front left corner front firing and one sort of midway along the back wall firing towards the opposite corner.). After that I worked on the xover setting seeing which setting had the best natural overlap between the mains and subs (80-100hz). Finally I tweaked the distance setting of the subs until I got the response as flat as possible through the x over (14.5ft sub, mains at 10ft).

It was long overdue. I just guessed with the first placement putting the 2 subs nearfield hoping that would be decent until I got time to see for sure. Wrong! It was horrible.

Ick...

the new response isn't perfect but it's a good deal better and other than the 90hz high Q suck hole and the 45hz room resonance (notice how those are exactly an octave apart? ) I'm pleased with it. Once I get subs #3 and 4 in there I should be able to flatten it out even more.

This is the average of 7 different seating positions.

Still have some issues with decay though. Rriiiiinng....

Re: Sealed test enclosure

Dude it really isn't hard at all. The worst part is getting it set-up to actually work and then setting your gains. The program is free but you'll end up spending about $300 bucks to get all of the equipment. (SPL meter, cables, external soundcard, phantom power source for the mic, calibrated mic from Herb, etc.) Well worth it if you are serious about audio and understanding things.

Re: Sealed test enclosure

REW is ridiculously easy once its set up. You can start off with a radioshack meter and an internal sound card if you don't have a lot of extra cash.

Re: Sealed test enclosure

its just crazy how bad the mic has been trashed for years in 12V since the Term Lab. our driver's aren't very accurate, and the mic is a driver

Re: Sealed test enclosure

Termlab is a completely different tool. If you want to know accurate total SPL levels at over 160db then obviously a tiny little speaker (the mic) is going to be getting thrashed at that level. Home audio is more concerned with linear response and details below 120db. I don't think a Term lab is going to tell you how much 3rd harmonic distortion you have with a 5khz tone at 65db.
