well, looking at that i would like to lower it, but we will see if that happens.

I got most of the bracing figured out today, as well as the hole for the sub cut. I was aiming for 14-1/16" and ended up with 14-3/32" so i was pretty pleased to do that with a jigsaw. still have to get some liquid nail to attach the port and then it will be pretty close to paint

Re: AV15-X build thread.

Update, with pics this time!

started my bracing on a budget, due to me being too cheap to get another sheet of mdf i have been bracing with whatever scraps i have left over. The hole from the sub went into the port brace and the rest of the pieces were cut down to 2" strips and i just sort of went for it. I might add more but this is what i have as of right now.

not bad for freehand.

hope the bolts aren't too big to fit in the sub's mounting holes

Re: AV15-X build thread.

looks good. I've found that the bracing is more for peace of mind than absolute necessity, and yours should be fine. Of course I added plywood lamination to mine, but it's not necessary. Just use plenty of glue and silicone.

Re: AV15-X build thread.

i got all the bracing pictured above done tonight, I'm trying to decide if i should brace around the sub mounting face or not, other than that I have some sanding to do then I will be ready for paint.

Did those 1/4 inch bolts fit?

I don't know yet, haven't gotten the sub yet. I pm'd VERTIGGO asking what size will fit in the mounting holes, but he hasn't answered back yet, if they are too big I would like to be able to return them before the sub gets here so its ready to go.

Re: AV15-X build thread.

I know they don't work on my IXL-18's. 10/24's or 10/32's are definitely strong enough.

I used 10/32's on all of my drivers. I don't think those will fit.

Re: AV15-X build thread.

The box itself is finially fully assembled, i was considering doing a bedliner or textured type finish to cover up the seams and flaws better than normal paint, plus be more rugged since it will need to be moved every once in a while. I remember seeing a few around here but can't seem to find them anymore, any links?

Re: AV15-X build thread.

i found a few in the database, and it looks like a good, tough finish. how smooth is the bedliner on the one you did Mike? When i did roll on bedliner in my pickup it ended up being very rough and i would want it to be smoother than that.

pics will be coming, until then, use your imagination

Re: AV15-X build thread.

The stuff I used feels like 200 grit sandpaper when you run your hand over it. The bed liner is very durable, and does a fine job of covering up seams and small blemishes.

do you happen to remember what brand it was? also, did you prime it first?

Re: AV15-X build thread.

It is called EZ Liner, I think it was $10 a can here in Canada. I didn't prime, just filled all holes with wood filler, sanded and sprayed. It took one and a half cans to do a 18 inch cube, but I did put in on heavy.

Re: AV15-X build thread.

I kind of forgot about how I am going to run the speaker wire into the box, binding posts would be nice, but me being cheap i was wondering if a couple of small bolts with connectors put on each side would work well enough? I could just run the wire through the box and silicone it but would prefer them to be removable.

Bolts would work, not that I would do it with binding posts being so cheap.

well i actually do have some binding posts, but they are designed for a terminal cup so they wont fit through the mdf. Ones that will work are are $8 + shipping at PE, I'll check radio shack next week sometime.

Re: AV15-X build thread.

Good news, my AV15-X is being built right now and will be shipped on Friday, I also got started priming the box, decided to just go with satin black for simplicity and ease of touch up. The box isn't perfect by any means but i think it will look just fine. Pics will come later if i get some color laid down today. Couldn't find binding posts anywhere but I did get 10-32 screws and t-nuts.

Memory is getting bad, I just checked and I did prime the box. I used a latex primer and rolled it on.

Re: AV15-X build thread.

The sub is getting finished this weekend and shipped on Monday hopefully, and I have to go back to college on Tuesday, so either that weekend or the next one I will be coming back to get it mounted in the box and take the whole thing back to the dorm room for testing. Hope it doesn't get me in too much trouble (my roommate is the RA on my floor and the room directly below me is the head RA for the whole campus)
