Re: New diy sub

Having re thought about how much excursion I am likely to get I am adding another 25mm outer panel so that the driver will have 50mm from the point of being screwed in so it will mean the grill won't need to be as thick. I think it works better.

I am going to start building it this weekend. I have bought Gripfill grab adhesive but am not sure if this is good enough so some suggestions would be much appreciated.

cheers

Graham

Re: New diy sub

I have attached some samples of wood veneering I have done with different varnishes. I have decided to go for the peel and stick veneer in american white oak as it works really well. I have tried about 5 different varnishes and have decided that Antique pine with a coat of clear gloss is what I will finish with. I have the cheery RS6's and although the sub will have a slight yellow tinge to it, once its been in the sunlight a bit it will turn slightly more orange to match the speakers. I think that some of it is because of the oak veneer finish. Unfortunately they only do the peel and stick in one finish.

The one I am going for is the one on the bottom left of the pic with 6 little panels on it.

Looks good though.

cheers

Re: New diy sub

Mike,

Cheers for that mate. Its taken a while but I seem to be making progress now. I am now trying to find the best adhesive to put it together with. I will be using lots of screws but there seems to be a mixed opinion on glues and adhesives. What do you think is the best to use.

cheers

Graham

Graham, this looks really good and the drivers look extremely menacing, should move some considerable air with them

Re: New diy sub

sub_crazy,

Cheers I know I've bought another 10 boxes just in case I run out.

Looking at it I am a bit concerned I have added too much bracing not leaving that much room inside. I have a load of fiber fill to put in. About 5kg's worth. Be good to get your opinions. Boy its heavy.

cheers

Graham

Have you figured out the net volume after allowing for the bracing?

Re: New diy sub

You'll have a bit over 10 cu.ft. of volume with the fiberfill. Can't wait to hear what your impressions are when you get the sub up and running.

Re: New diy sub

Mike

I thought that adding fiberfill it can add up to 25% internal volume. Hopefully I should still see a good result. More pics to come at the weekend.

Not too sure how to go about the speaker grills yet. I have a few ideas.

cheers

Graham

Re: New diy sub

My understanding of fiberfill is one pound per cubic ft. equals a 10% increase in volume.

Re: New diy sub

Mike

I just read this.

Quote:
A few rules of thumb: Stuff small enclosures those with up to about 3 cubic feet of internal volume or less with 1.5 pounds of fiberfill for each cubic foot of internal volume and you should get about a 30-percent increase in box volume without seriously affecting other performance variables. For larger enclosures, add stuffing at a rate of approximately 1 pound per cubic foot and you should get a virtual-space boost of about 25 percent. One thing's certain: You'll impress the out of your friends at the art gallery and bistro.
Quotes about 25%

cheers

Once you get this up and running it will be great to see some measurement figures on how it performs and most importantly your impressions on how it sounds

Re: New diy sub

Recruit,

Cheers mate. The excitment is killing me. It really is one heavy mother. This weekend I will be adding the top and the two outers along with the speaker wall plate. I will also pilot the holes for the drivers and add the inner pieces to double up for the feet. Then I should be able to add the speaker wire and fiber fill. Then just add the last side and then veneer.

The problem I have at the moment is when the side goes on and it is veneered and varnished I have just the drivers to screw in. My main worry is the speaker cable flapping around or getting tangled when I fit the drivers. I have to add the drivers last because of the veneering. There will be alot of fiberfill so hopefully it should be ok and not get in the way.

cheers

Graham

That being true, you'll need 10 pounds of material.

Re: New diy sub

Mike,

That will be all of the 5kg fiberfill I have. I take it I just pretty much throw it in the box loosely. Im desperate to get it finished but I have found that every weekend I work on it there is another tool or different screws or something else. Where's Arny when you need him.
