Re: New diy sub

Hi guys,

I am looking at getting some of these bolts along with some t nuts. I am only fixing them into 25mm mdf. I didn't think about doubling it up for fixing. Forgot all about it. Now I have fitted the two inners and braces it is going to be difficult to fix an extra thickness so I can fit 50mm bolts.

I suppose I could make a larger circle and glue it in with the bond and seal, then screw on the inside where the driver will sit.

Is 25mm going to be enough to keep those 50lb driver in tight.

These are the bolts I am looking at.

Be good to get your thoughts

cheers

Graham

Re: New diy sub

Hi guys,

Been busy again for a few hours in the garage. I have filled in some of the many holes with filler and sanded down. I have drilled the pilot holes for the outers and fitted my binding post for my wiring. I will be putting on the other side, the two outers and then fit the speaker wire along with the fiber fill and then put the lid on and then it just leaves the veneering, the routing of the corners to fit the quadrant and then add the feet.

I have also sanded the edges of the bracing circles just to smooth it all off.

Heres a few more pics for you. Sorry they aren't great I don't have photoshop on my pc.

cheers

Graham

Are you sure that you have never built a sub before as you are doing a mighty fine job so far Graham?

Re: New diy sub

Recruit,

Never mate. I really hate diy and never do it. My poxy camera batteries have run out. Aaaaahhh!

My carpenter guy came over this morning to sort out the lid for me. He chisled out 2mm in grooves so the braces fit perfectly. Now the lid doesn't have sit proud of the sides. I have now fitted the two outers and filled. I have sanded the outer two circles as they didn't fit 100%. They are now and have filled the gaps between the outer panel and first inner panel so when I veneer in the inner circles of the box it will have a perfect smooth edge to stick to.

I have also fitted 8 little 25mm mdf squares to double up so I can fit the feet. I will be having 8 feet in total to be on the safe side. I am designing the grill to match the Monitor Audio RS speakers although I have not got the wood for these yet. I have ordered my hex bolts and t nuts so they should be here fingers crossed on Monday.

Left to do:

Fit the wiring. Doing today
Fit the fiberfill. Doing today
Fit the lid. Doing today
Veneer the inners of the outer circles. Doing next week
Fit and wire up the subs. Doing next week
Fit the side. Doing next week.
Fill and sand down any final holes. Doing next week
Veneer box. Doing next week
Routing edges and fitting 6mm quadrant. Doing next week
Varnishing box. Doing next week
Fit legs. Doing next week.

Blowing away neighbour. Defo doing next week.

God next week is going to be busy.

I will however test the sub when I get my bolts and t nuts to make sure all it well and just screw side in at the moment.

I think that is all.

Cheers
Graham

Recruit,

I have just put the lid on and added more bond and seal on the inside and fill the gaps on the outside of the box. I tell you one thing though my fingers are red raw. Pictures shortly.

cheers

Graham

Re: New diy sub

I think the word I am looking for is very envious of the forthcoming bass that you will be listening and feeling, if I get a dedicated room eventually then DIY would probably be the best route, or possibly IB, looking through some of the setups in the Shack they really are incredible...

Re: New diy sub

Recruit,

The Americans are very inspiring peeps. To be honest mine was modelled on the Seaton Submersive and only because for the money I wanted to better it and I think I should quite easily. The submersive cost pollywoggle £1650 approx including duties etc.... and mine has cost £1450 all in and I think that's a really good price for a sub that hopefully will chuck out heavy bass and be great in the upper bass frequency which is where I am very interested in hence going sealed. I am hoping for about 112db at 10hz with room gain and nearly 140db at 50hz so that should wipe the floor with PB13 ultra I had.

cheers

Graham

It has always been my opinion that the US make the best subs and still believe this to be the case, lots of fresh ideas coming from here for sure...

Re: New diy sub

Recruit

Your right mate and to be honest they all have bigger rooms so they have to have bigger subs. They are a great inspiration to me and also as I have always said on avforums american subs are tonnes better than subs sold in the UK. In the UK we need alot of inspiration because we don't have alot to be honest. Most people seem to hang themselves up with the common brands because its the right thing to do, but it isn't and I think I have prooved that.

If only people would move away from what is the norm here in the UK and you know what that is. I am not saying that they are not poor subs but in my opinion I have had most of them and have always felt left wanting more. Yes I am bass hungary but aren't we all. We all push our subs to their limits and then say why was my sub doing this or that.

Ive shouted off a few times defending american subs on the UK forums and have been knocked down a few times but I will always defend the likes of Epik, ED and Mark Seaton.

cheers

Graham

ha ha, yeah....i'd recommend you remove anything remotely delicate from your cinema room....it's surely going to vibrate and fall off it's shelf or whatever!! You'll probably end up blowing your windows out!
