Re: New diy sub

MDF, so far all my designs have been MDF. I tried to build something out of baltic birch but when I went Home Depot was out . The Geurilla Glue worked great too, in my smaller bookshelf speakers I had a hard time getting the t-nuts to bite and they would tend to want to wiggle and spin. I never did take those back apart and put on Geurilla Glue tho if I ever have them apart I'll put some on any t-nut that falls out. But I built my 12s that way and it worked great, also put in the t-nuts for my friends sub and floor spikes that way and it worked great as well. Now the hole can't be too much smaller than the t-nut obviously, but as long as its close it works great.

Here is a great link discussing the installation of t-nuts with and without glues

Re: New diy sub

Thanks for this guys. I have M5 hex bolts and t nuts. I could try to countersink the inside so the t nut has a slight recess and then glue them in.

Re: New diy sub

Been thinking about EQing tonight and looking at various options.

FEEDBACK DESTROYER PRO DSP1124P - £70 approx

FEEDBACK DESTROYER PRO FBQ2496 - £120 approx

ULTRADRIVE PRO DCX2496 £220

ANTI MODE 8033 - £240

The first one seems to quite popular but am worried about the frequency response only starting at 20hz. What about frequencies below this as I am sure mine will hit a bit below that. How does that get measured. The second one has an auto facility on it from what I have read which would be handle with the option of manually tuning it. The third has a frequency response starting at 10hz and the Anti mode is 16hz. Does all this really make much difference.

Opinions would be appreciated please.

cheers
Graham

Re: New diy sub

The BFD's require measurement software like REW to see where the filters need to be applied. The Antimode 8033 is fully automatic and does an excellent job according to the review I read on it.

http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...de-8033-a.html

As stated in the review, the 8033 does in minutes what it took hours to do with a BFD.

For the money the Antimode seems to be the little box of magic for sub EQ...

Re: New diy sub

Thanks guys for that. I have used REW before. I had the PB13 before and REW produced quite a flat graph with no EQ the position of that sub will be the same as the one I am building so I am hoping for a similar result. What about the frequency response of the BFDs as they start from 20hz so what happens with the frequencies below that.

cheers

Re: New diy sub

Graham - I know that the Velodyne SMS-1 goes down to 5hz on one of the software versions for the unit, it is a long time since I played with one as I always found Audyssey more useful for EQ, to note though the filters only allow EQ'ing down to 15hz although the roll off can be set lower which is 5hz...but it does give a warning when doing this.

Re: New diy sub

Hi guys,

Just had a total nightmare with the t nuts. Didn't work at all. I pushed the bolts through with the washer and then tightened up the t nut a little and then screwed in the bolt. The first couple worked fine and then all the others, the t nuts wouldnt go into the wood. They just kept turning without gripping into the mdf.

Any suggestions? I am in fear of having to install my drivers at an angle if I cannot fix this.

cheers

I have always installed mine with a hammer and then applied glue to the perimeter of the T-Nut.

Re: New diy sub

Panic over, sorted it out now. Phew! I got an old drill bit to open the holes on the inside and then fixed them in. Thank god for that. I will be testing it at 6pm today when my brother comes over. Will take some pics then and do a video.

cheers

Re: New diy sub

Prize,

Be patient my boy. I am letting the glue dry and at 6pm it will be fired up and rest assured you WILL hear it from all the way up there.

Bloody Gorilla glue, I got it every where. What a nightmare that stuff is.

cheers

Re: New diy sub

After the glue dries run the bolts through the T-Nuts before you mount the sub to make sure there are no problems.

Re: New diy sub

Hi guys,

Here is a picture of my veneer that I got from Richard Russell. I got two 8 x 4 sheets at £113 all in and that will veneer the whole of my box which I think is a great price. Just need to sort out the adhesive which I am not sure which to get yet. It is in oak and has a better colour to it than the peel and stick white oak I got from Vale Veneers.

Some teaser pics to follow.

cheers

Graham

As promised some more pics. Forgive the quality, rubbish digital camera.

Here is bad attempt at installing t nuts. The first one was a complete nightmare but the second one was a complete success.

You'll need to keep the poly fill away from the pole vent of the subs.
