Designing Dual 18" vented boxes: ED19O.2 vs. SS RL-p18

Ahh, yeah I see what you're saying now, sorry

You're right, eD still provides good bang for the buck and is cheaper than some of the competition. I just miss the good old days when they weren't as popular and were super cheap

Building two boxes at once vs. one at a time will definitely be easier, less cuts, etc. On the flip side, if you build one, you'll certainly learn from it and probably make a small mistake or two that you can avoid on the second build Its a tough call, but the more I think about it if I were you I'd probably build them simultaneously if you can afford it.

I'd get the D4 drivers and wire each cab to 4ohm mono to get the most power from the amp. Those drivers have quite a bit left after 22mm xmax is met and won't bottom out until after 30mm one way. Also with thermal losses and suspension tightening it'll take more power than the sims indicate to bottom the out.
This is certainly an intriguing option that is decidedly different from the approach recommended by others in this thread. I'm not sure that I understand how the two D4 VC would be wired (series/parallel) in your plan, as series would be 8 Ohm and parallel would be 2 Ohm.

I wonder if anyone has implemented this build strategy or if there are any concerns about going in this direction versus more broadly recommended D2 with VC wired in series and the two drivers powered independently by the two amplifier channels.

The other idea I have is the Mal-X 21" driver that just came out. Have you thought about using one of these per cab instead of 2 18's? It'd be a bit more expensive than 2 190v2's, but it should be impressive in a big ported cab.
That also sounds intriguing, the specs have just emerged on diycable.com for this driver, so I will model it an check it out. Still no telling exactly when it will be available...

Wire each D4 driver in parallel to get a 2ohm load and then wire one driver on each amp channel, or wire both drivers vc's in parallel for 2ohm each and then wire the drivers in series for 4ohm mono and bridge the amp into it, or wire each drivers vc's in series for an 8ohm load and then wire the 2 drivers in parallel for a 4ohm load and bridge the amp into it. Either way go for 4ohms nominal per cabinet.

The amp makes the most power into 2ohm stereo or 4ohm mono.

I got the Maelstrom 21 into Win ISD and modeled a single 21" in the same 21.7 cu ft box, tuned to 15 Hz as seen with the 2 - ED 190v.2. They compare like this:

I had to apply a high pass filter at 16 Hz to keep VC excursion down. Any idea what should be safe for that driver?

Here is a comparison with a 4th order low pass filter at 60 Hz on both systems and application of parametric EQ to the 2 18" ED 190v.2 cab (Fc=15 Hz, Q=1.0, Gain=4.5 dB)

The single Maelstrom is pretty remarkable. Flatter above 15 Hz. I just wonder how that size and mass will behave with high dynamics, articulating rapid tight bass guitar, for example...
