I now have the allen bolts for all the drivers and am ready to start finishing the cabinets.

No such thing as enough bass. well enough of anything for that matter when it comes to this hobby.

To answer why am I building these guys? Well, because it is, for one, a challenge. Also, I like things symmetrical-no idea why, but that is me- what is on the left is on the right. That is the reason for 2 boxes. Why 4 drivers- because of the increase in output with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. 4 drivers gives me the most output for my situation and I can't fit 8 because of lack of space.

Also, I seem to feel that big sound in a big room is somehow different than big sound in a small room. It just seems to be more powerful, even if the volume is the same. In order to get really big big sound in a larger room you need more output per speaker or more speakers than in a given smaller room. I am all for more speakers. Plus, these cabinets are way cooler to look at than I thought they would be. I am really glad I went with this build. The only problem is that they are intensely heavy and bulky. I hope they are easily placed in my theater.

any thoughts?

Robert, I'm with you on the symmetry. I've always had a little nagging in the back of my head saying "things are uneven in the front stage!". And I guess you're right, to get big sound in a big room, you really have to step up your efforts. How are things going after the weekend, any updates?

Here is an update. Cabinets are really looking great. The color is just what I wanted. Hopefully, I will be able to get the baffles looking good with the paint. The pictures are of still wet cabinets and they need four more applications of tung oil to be where I want them. Then, painting the baffles.

Looking good. Are you doing the baffles in the same finish? The granite tops are going to look nice. How thick will they be and are you using caster's for these behemoth's? I think I asked you that before. These are going to be HEAVY

Closer to 900 with the 40 pounds. 475 as they are, 200 and more depending on passive weights for the drivers and about 175 for the granite. 890 total for each cabinet rough estimate. The baffles will be painted black with black granite.

I weighed each piece before I put it together. I used a total of 17 sheets of wood for both cabs, with very little waste. Basically, just the cutouts were "wasted". Until I get an industrial scale, I will not be able to get a true measurement. The granite is supposed to be 1 1/4" thick.

Wow... I hope you've got some solid floors wherever these are going. they are looking great though, I can't wait to see how the wood finishes and how the granite looks when you get it on. How will you get it to stick... industrial adhesive? It would be pretty awful to shake a granite panel loose one day.

Dang Robert! I figure the 2 drivers and 4 passives as about 220-240lbs in each cab. 175lbs of granite per? That's a lot of granite. The cabs alone are 475 as of now

? Geez...that is some heft right there. I'm interested to see what the granite is going to be like.

My XXX cab hasn't even shipped yet. We are just now getting the logistics of that ironed out. Plus Nathan was doing a dual SDX15 sub too, so we are waiting to ship everything together on one pallet. He sent me a pic of the SDX cab today and it is NICE!

I'm going by the sample for the granite weight. It is 1 1/4 inch thick black granite with sharp 45 degree bevel on the top edges. No bullnoses. The bottom will be bolted and the top well that is still being worked out.

I do not want a urethane finish or anything that builds p on the wood, so I am going with tung oilTakes lots of time to dry between coats. Anyone use this kind of material recently?

I have no doubts about them being close to 1000 lbs each. My setup which is small comparatively is around a "meager" 400 lbs.

I have not worked with true Tung before but have many projects with Watco Teak oil (not a true tung). Just got done with Zaph SR-71's with Etimoe veneer that I finished with Oil. Let me know if you have any questions. There are a few simple tips that will make the finish really have a refined beautiful luster.
