| Re: 4 18" 5400's and 8 passives "WOW!" My best results with watco/fornbys(sp?) tung/teak/danish oil is as follows: Use a foam brush for application - easy and cheap with good result. Soak veneer with finish and allow to set for about 15mins. Reapply and let sit for about another 15. Really get a good amount on the wood - it should be soaked. After 15 mins, wipe ALL oil off. The wood should be as dry as possible. If there is extra sitting on the wood it will get gummy and screw things up. Allow to sit for 24hours to dry. Use 0000 steel wool to smooth all surfaces. Clean any dust from wool off and repeat above procedure. Keep repeating these steps. You will know you have enough applications when the entire surface of the wood is evenly satin gloss. Usually for me it has taken about 5 coats. You will get gloss on the harder parts of the grain a long time before the soft sections. After everything is good to go let it dry for at least a few days. A week would be ideal but i usually get to anxious and jump the gun Go over it again with 0000 and dont be afraid to use a little muscle. The oil penetrated and hardens in the wood so you are not going to screw things up. You want to make sure that everything is smooth. After the wool, put a couple of layers of wax on it. I really love Briwax and believe it is the best out there. 2 layers of this and you are good to go. Buff out with a cloth and you are set. Make sure to apply wax with 0000 also. A few things to note Some woods will weep excess oil after you have completely wiped them down. Keep an eye on it the first application and see if this is the case. If it weeps you will have to wipe down avery half hour or so until it stops. When using wool between coats make sure you get the edges good - it is easy to miss and you can end up with a lot of roughness along the edges. Hopefully this helps - if anyone else has some tips to add please do! Just dont follow directions on the bottle! | ||||

| Re: 4 18" 5400's and 8 passives "WOW!" Any more updates? I've really enjoyed reading/looking at your progress so far am even I'm getting anxious to see the end result, and hear your subjective reviews. I'm sure it'll be the best feeling to finally fire it up in place and see what it can do (at 20 percent gain. =P ) | ||||

| Re: 4 18" 5400's and 8 passives "WOW!" I am currently gathering product and getting the grill system worked out. The granite top and bottom are being done for me. The cabinets are multiple layers of MDF and 13 ply Oak Plywood. The Oak was very clean and smooth. I got 2 beautiful panels that were perfect matches for each other for the front panels. The oak was a good choice as far as strength, but it was very difficult to work out the finishing of the panels. But, alas, the finish is done on the front and rear. The top and bottom will be taken care of with the granite, so The baffles and grills are where I need to direct attention now. Hopefully, in the next week or so, I will get some real progress. Thanks, Robert | ||||

| Re: 4 18" 5400's and 8 passives "WOW!" I really want to see how this thing turns out. The exotic (or at least unique) material projects are really interesting. At some point I was thinking about a thick slate top for a subwoofer, but it didn't go very far. Maybe once I see your finished result it will inspire me! | ||||

At this point, the baffles have been sealed with 3 coats satin poly and sanded smooth. They seem to be ready for primer. Good luck, Robert | ||||

| Re: 4 18" 5400's and 8 passives "WOW!" Sorry to hear about your hand Robert. If I had those WMD's I would probably revert to using my feet to finish but then again crazy is my last name ![]() If I was closer I would definitely offer up some help to finish if only to feel the mule kick to the chest when there done. | ||||

| Re: 4 18" 5400's and 8 passives "WOW!" Yes, I wish I knew at least one other person who had at least a small interest in subs or speakers for that matter who lived close to me, but no such luck. These cabinets are really big and I just don't want to hurt myself or damage what I have already done. Soon, I hope to be going forward again. Thanks, ' Robert | ||||
