Sonotube Veneer

I'll be picking up my Sonotube next week and was just curious if anyone had any experience using wood veneer on them. I did a Google search and saw a couple people saying it was possible, but I question how well the veneer will hold to the exterior of the Sonotube since it looks to be paper/cardboard based.

Does anyone have experience with using a wood veneer on Sonotube?

I've heard the lines in the cardboard show up on the veneer. I've never actually tried this though.

Like Boomie mentioned, I think the biggest problem is going to be the lines in the cardboard. They could be filled, but it would be a lot of work. The other concern would be with moving the tube... I find there's some flex to the tube which I don't think would be very veneer friendly. Maybe some has done it and will chime in.

Maybe you could use a woodbacked veneer like this: http://www.flexwood.com/

You could contact them and ask them specifically about sonotube. Maybe they have dealt with it.

Veneer likes a stable substrate. I'm not familiar with how much flex a sonotube has, but if it's more than negligible that could be a problem. Seems like this would only be an issue during transport, and if you carry it upright, not a problem at all. If you want to eliminate all instability problems and issues of seeing cardboard lines, wood-backed veneer makes sense as the way to go.
