Port Material?

I went to Lowes today because I needed another box of screws and wood glue for my current sub build. While there, I noticed some expandable/flexible aluminum tubing. I believe it was to be used as duct work. Would this work well for port material? Seemed to be about half the price of PVC and a 1/4 the weight. It seemed fairly sturdy- at least enough to handle air pressure from the 250watts going to each of my subs. Thoughts?

Re: Port Material?

Resonance from a thin metal tube of HVAC duct would be substantial, I would think. You need enough damping factor inherent to the material and from its wall thickness to avoid turning the port into something like a trumpet, sax, etc. PVC and sonotube have that advantage over very thin metal.

Re: Port Material?

The density and stability of the PVC is worth the minimal upcharge. Odd resonances from the tin duct would likely color the sub output... and probably not favorably!

I saw that I was a little "late to the party" there. Didn't know if you had proceeded or not. Good deal. I think you made the right decision. Hope the sub is nice and tight.
