TC-2000

I'm doing a LLT based upon the numbers that a few folks have posted here....

For my birthday, my wife bought me (2) tc-2000 15 svc and a buttkicker amp.

Yes, WAF built in!

I'm going with roughly 320 L (net) in a box and a 6"x27" port.

build photos - with trusty assistant....
http://picasaweb.google.com/brendan.lewis/TC2000

Dimensions (internal) are 38x24x24" minus bracing, ports and woofer displacement.

No glue has been applied yet, this is just a test fit.

Front baffle is 2 layers 3/4" MDF, the rest is 1 layer with window pane bracing.

Port is 6" pvc to be cut and applied once the bracing is hollowed out.

Your wife is obviously a wonderful woman for hooking you up with that.

That is a great combo, and like Rob, I can't wait to hear your impressions.

Re: TC-2000

Box #2 is done. It's 6 cu ft net, tuned to 20 Hz.

The last 4 photos are the newer box.
http://picasaweb.google.com/brendan.lewis/TC2000

The unfinished box (plain MDF) is the 12 cu ft model. The box with the black rattle can front is the 6 cu ft.

Impressions: I like it more for music. It has more "presence", thump, umph, etc. (highly technical terms, mind you)

I haven't metered it yet, but I've run test tones. It's noticably weaker at 16 hz than the 12 cu ft box, but for everything besides the lowest of the lows, I like it more than the biggun. Plus, I can move it by myself.

Thumbs up Re: TC-2000

Okay, interesting stuff indeed. This is a clear sign that musical performance is subjective, regardless of how/when/ where the port begins to contribute output to the system.

Agreed, but the smaller, higher tuned enclosure is gonna be less accurate to the source material.

That's various forms of distortion. I'm discussing this very issue elsewhere, and I'm wondering if rather than using a less accurate sub, a solution for people who like this effect might be putting distortion into the signal on the front end electronically?

So? If thats what he prefers, then good for him.

Not everyone prefers the most accurate reproduction of music.

I wouldn't say that. The differences Brendan is noticing are mostly due different frequency responses. If he would EQ both identical enough (within 1 dB from 20 Hz and up), I suspect he couldn't differentiate them at reasonable levels.

Absolutely, that's fine.

Might make for an interesting experiment. Brendan, can you take a FR measurement at the seat from both subs in the sam eplace? Even if EQ'd to be similar, the 20hz tuned sub should be taking a hit in transient response relatively speaking and should be more prone to audible port effects. Doubtful these things will come too much into play with music at moderate levels.

Re: TC-2000

Steve,

I built the big box out of mdf, not sonotube, so it's almost unmovable with the driver in it. If you'd like to come move them around, you're more than welcome!

I may move the smaller box upstairs to see what both of them sound like on a movie.
If I do that, I'll see what kind of response curve I have.

Pattyosu,

The front face is 19" wide, the height is 29.5" and the depth is 24".
The front face is 2 layers laminated with elmers poly glue and the rest is just braced.
