| New Subwoofer in the works! I just thought I'd let you guys in on a new subwoofer I'm working on at the moment. It's a sealed enclosure housing 4 of the Dayton RS 15" HO drivers. They cabinet dimensions are roughly 36"H x 18"W x 23"D and the drivers will be mounted so that two of them are on each of the two 36" x 18" faces causing the reactive forces to cancel out. This is key to keeping the cabinet from walking around the room. This is especially important for those having tile or hardwood floors. This driver layout also lessens the need for extensive amounts of bracing, but the cabinets will still have anywhere from .75" to 1.5" walls with .75" bracing. I just don't believe in building flimsy enclosures. I'm currently building two of these and possibly a third. One will be for me, and the second will be for a gentleman in Orlando (who may opt for a 2nd at a later date) and I might possibly be building one for a gentleman in South Carolina. So I imagine after I get back from our little Thanksgiving trip to Georgia I'll be slinging lots of MDF dust. If anyone has any questions about this design please let me know. Brian Bunge | |||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! Awesome look. Have you given some serious thought to being in the cabinet/speaker making business? You've cranked out many beautiful DIY speakers thus far. ![]() If you don't have a BFD for your sub, get one fast! If you don't have REW, get it now! | |||

That's a good question. For a couple of years I was building speaker cabinets (and fully assembled speakers) for GR Research's kits. I've built most of the Exodus Audio cabinets for customers as well. I've also built many custom subwoofers and a few custom speaker designs for my own customers. I had to abandon it as a full-time venture a few years ago and then moved to FL last November. I'm now at a point where I'm ready to start building again and these subs are my first venture back into it. I've got orders for two right now, plus one for myself. I've got a few ideas of some custom speakers I'd like to build as well. Something along the lines of what Sonnie has been wanting to do with a multi-driver array is one thing I've been looking at seriously. Now all I need is the time to develop all of my ideas! ![]() I should start cutting MDF this week on these subs and just purchased a new Nikon D70s digital SLR for my wife (big camera nut!) so I will have her take very detailed pics of the build process. Let me know if you guys have any other questions or comments. Brian Bunge | ||||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! Well, I've started cutting MDF for the first subwoofer and should have most of the assembly work done on it by this weekend. I'll be sure to get my wife to take some pictures so you guys can see what this beast looks like. I'm afraid to see just how heavy this thing will be. Brian Bunge | |||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! I've really struggled to find time to work on these lately. The holidays were just brutal, but I should have the first cabinet just about ready for the laminate in the next few days. Then it'll probably be next Friday or Saturday before that can be applied. Should be lots of fun! Brian Bunge | |||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! I should have pics of the raw MDF cabinet ready for the laminate this weekend. I probably would have been done with that part this past weekend except that the rain kept coming through and slowing my progress. Brian Bunge | |||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! Hey Brian, it's been some time! It sounds like all is well and your transition is moving right along..good for you. Your sub looks great, but admittedly no surprise. I see you elected to terminal the front, what was your thinking on that decision?..functionality? Looks cool though! I'll be very interested to hear your impressions on performance. I'm getting ready to build another sealed, but I haven't decided on a driver/s yet? Anyway, very nice job Brian. | |||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! Amazing job, just amazing. Wasn't quite what I was expecting as far as styling goes. I don't mean this in a bad way. For some odd reason I expected it to be identical to the picture you posted with what looks like a cherry veneer, just in subwoofer form. It looks WAY BETTER this way though. I really approve of your aesthetic tastes. I just LOVE the look of those Dayton RS subs as well. The 15" version really magnifies this beauty Any listening impressions yet?If you don't have a BFD for your sub, get one fast! If you don't have REW, get it now! | |||

| Re: New Subwoofer in the works! Yes, it's a quad Dayton 15" HO sub. They are wired in 2 ohm pairs which are then seried at the posts for a 4 ohm load. It is currently powered by a Behringer EP2500 in bridged mode. This sub is for a customer in Orlando and he opted for a WilsonArt matte black laminate finish. My own sub will match the speaker cabinet pictured above. As far as measurements, I'll have to see if I have time to get some before he picks it up next weekend. If not, I've got another cabinet in the works for another customer and I'll try to get measurements from it. I haven't used REW yet so it might take some time to figure it out. Brian Bunge | |||
