Thumbs up Crown XLS 602D $229 AR

Hey Guys,

I went ahead and bought my Crown. This is a pretty good deal if you ask me. MAP is $499

Specifications

Output Power:
2-ohm Stereo (Per Channel): 840W
4-ohm Stereo (Per Channel): 600W
8-ohm Stereo (Per Channel): 370W

8-ohm Bridged-Mono: 1200W
4-ohm Bridged-Mono: 1680W

Road Dog Online is an authorized retailer, which means you get the rebate and the warranty. (I looked them up on Harman Pro's site.)

Currently, they are offering the XLS 602D for $369.00 shipped.

Add Crown's $135 MIR, and you are down to $234 just like that!

Here is Road Dog's link:
Road Dog Online

And a link to the rebate valid until May 31!
Crown Cash Rebate

I pricematched the deal to Audiolines because, Road Dog would have to charge me sales tax.

Also qualifies for a $5 Pricegrabber rebate! Final price $229

Be forewarned if you plan to run this amp at 4 Ohms in bridged mono mode that it will run very hot. Make sure it is well ventilated and don't be surprised if it stops if you are working it hard.

Re: Crown XLS 602D $229 AR

Hmm... That's good to know. I was thinking about driving a 2 ohm RLp15 in series. Obviously it might be a little rough on the amp thermally, but what about the driver? They say to leave the attenuators full open so that you have an equal output on each bridged channel. I don't plan on abusing anything, but of course I will be living in a house with a radio, film, and television major. You never know what kinda stuff an intoxicated roommate might pull. Obviously a configuration like this might be a little rough on the amp thermally since it is pushing out more power, but what about the driver? It would probably never even see 1680W, right? After amplifier efficiency loss, line loss, etc. I would guess maybe the sub would have around 1500W max to work with. So would this mean that I would have 500W or so of headroom? Thanks!

Charlie, How're you going to use this amp in a home theater or pro audio?

I can't answer much of what's asked there, but I'd be inclined to NOT run it at 2 Ohms. Despite whatever posted specs the amp may have, 2Ohms is just gonna be too much for just about any amp. I'd say stick with 4 or more.

Yeah, I meant 2 ohm dual voice coil in series. There's no way I would attempt 2. I wound up going with an 8 ohm.

Re: Crown XLS 602D $229 AR

I've never had a problem running the crowns at 2ohms. It wasn't that model though (Amps I used put out more power) and they never shut down even when driving them hard.

Re: Crown XLS 602D $229 AR

Yeah, the XLS is their low-end model. I decided to play it safe, and power an 8 ohm TC2k. The amp was rated for 4 ohms, but I figured 1200W would give me all the output I needed without the risk of overheating. I just glued my first joint on the enclosure, I hope I used enough Titebond!

The Lab Gruppen Amps are good to use, run them down to 2 ohm and still no problems even at maximum output. The C series may be good as you can set them to switch on in a certain order (using your computer) and are able to make settings which other amps don't have. Really good to work with

Re: Crown XLS 602D $229 AR

Yes LAb are very good amp, but 10 X the price of an XLS so i'm not sure will fit his bill and i'm not sure people needs Lab amp in their houses anyway, QSC and Crown makes excellent amp's that will fit anybody need :-)
