Re: Sub Box Design

When I get home from work I'll try to pull up those files and view them. Can't right now. I'm pretty familiar with WINISD.

Re: Sub Box Design

haven't downloaded your driver file, but from looking at your project file, you need a bigger box and a lower tune. Have you already purchased your driver? I doesn't look like it's up to the task of big subwoofing. Looks like it ~might~ be alright for car audio. Let me know if you need some suggestions on other drivers.

Re: Sub Box Design

I've already bought the driver, and it's to be used as a music sub. How do you alter the box size (in Win ISD). I'll upload a box design i did up when i get home.

Re: Sub Box Design

When the project window box opens click on the box tab. That will change the window box and the box size and tuning frequency will be visible.
I'm afraid you're going to find that the speaker is inapropriate for use as a music sub. There isn't anything that WinISD can do for you on this one . . . .
My recomendation, just put it in a sealed box no bigger than 2 cuft or sized to fit where you want to place it and see how it sounds.

Re: Sub Box Design

Are you sure you have entered the driver parameters correctly? I notice there is no Pe value listed. What driver is it? Do you have a link to the driver specs??

Here is the link to the driver info

I have heard this particular driver in another setup and it sounded decent.

Re: Sub Box Design

yes thats the old version of the specs, i think there's a new one somewhere just gotta find it, all other specs are correct except it's a 4 ohm driver. It's a developmental driver

Very weird!even many speakers with a 6 inch woofer would exceed 3.5 Xmax....There's certainly something wrong

Re: Sub Box Design

Looking at the parameters entered in the file, it appears to be a midrange / midbass driver. I am not trying to be a smart-***, but is this a guitar speaker or something out of a reinforcement application? Huge magnet, pleated (accordion) surround, shallow cone? It sure looks like it based on the data entered in the WinISD file. I could be wrong, but it sure looks like a PA speaker to me.

Re: Sub Box Design

Probably is a PA speaker. Most of those are limited to midranges and have very little xmax. I've seen some big 18" subs that only have 6 mm of xmax.

Re: Sub Box Design

I also agree, reading the TS that this is a P.A driver and as such will probably suffer bad HD when played below resonance. It will reproduce down to 35Hz but it won't sound as good as a sub designed for hifi enclosures with Fe's down to 30Hz or lower. If you plug the TS of that driver into winISD it will tell you you need a ported enclosure 700 odd litres to make the most of it. I would say this is because the driver looks to be designed to sit in an open back guitar cab.

Re: Sub Box Design

Checked with the fella I got it from and it (the driver) is based on a Pro - audio speaker design. Also said it'll get down to about 30Hz with the right tune. Question can WinISD tell you what frequency a box is tuned at if you input the info (will try and upload a design of the box when I get home)? The efficiency of the driver is high (99db Watt/metre) and can take 600 watts so don't know if this has an effect on the sound. Might make an alright bass guitar speaker?

Re: Sub Box Design

If the parameters posted earlier are correct and the 1w/1m SPL is 99dB, you got yourself a midbass driver intended for a reinforcement application. Yes, it may get down to 30Hz, but it will likely not be very strong there due to the short linear travel. Probably a good driver, but may leave you wanting more on the low end. Now that is based on the previously posted data; if that has changed or was in error, then this is all out the window.

Can you post a picture of the driver, front and back? That would clear up a lot of questions that some have in regard to the application of this driver as a reinforcement transducer is normally easy to pick out. Typically, they are going to be heavy duty in appearance, cast frames, big magnets etc... What you will also see as typical is that the frontplate will not have the thickness that you normally do in a subwoofer. Another very telling sign is a bumped backplate to give clearance for the VC on the inward stroke. Accordion surround is another telling characteristic of a reinforcement driver as well as cone angle and overall depth.
