Replacement amp?

Hey Shacksters,

I've got an old V2-B 12" M&K sealed sub that blew the amp--I send it in to M&K over the Christmas break (06) and they went belly-up before they fixed my amp.

So, I've been trying to find a replacement amp for it.

I see that ApexJr. has some actual M&K amps (I guess he got a hold of M&K's surplus?), which would probably be perfect (though they are for later models); however, I was hoping to get one under $100...

My question is, where can I get a decent sub amp (around 125W) for a great price?

Any help much appreciated!

Enjoy the day,
Phil

Now about that projector...

Re: Replacement amp?

My father-in-law had the same problem with his older M&K. I replaced the amp with an appropriate parts express amp like those listed above and it performs better than ever.

Re: Replacement amp?

Thanks for the replies! The Shack continues to deliver...

I'm glad to hear the PartsExpress units have worked well.

I've got to get it down soon so I can send it to my brother-in-law in exchange for his InFocus X-1 projector he traded me.

With the SVS PB12-2+ I don't need the M&K anymore!

BTW, no one ever talks about chapter 12 of "The Island" for LFE. But, I find it to be fantastic for all sorts of different HZ sounds. FWW...

Re: Replacement amp?

So, I found a vendor (ApexJr.) who picked up some surplus M&K sub amps (with higher wattage than the original), and I bought one.

Once I started to test the amp before installing it, I realized that the woofer is a dual voice coil. Incidentally, I hooked up the leads to one (side?) of the woofer and tested it to be sure I hadn't blown the woofer. It pushed fine, so I'm happy about that.

My question: since my amp only has one set of leads, is it bad/wrong/ill-advised to just hook up the single +/- leads to the woofer? What are the other options? Are there DVC amps, or just two amps for a DVD? Help!

As far as I can tell, my original M&K amp appeared to have two sets of leads rather than two discrete amps.

Sorry I'm so dumb, but I could really use some help so I don't destroy what's left of a great old subwoofer.

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Replacement amp?

What is the impeadance of each voice coil? If they are 4ohm or 2 ohm then wire them in series to your new amp. If they are 8 ohm then wire them in Parallel to the amplifer.

Series: Run the + wire (from Amp) to the + on voice coil one, then from the - on voice coil one run a wire to the + on voice coil two, then from the - on vioce coil Two you connect the - lead from the amplifer

Parallel: Run the + and - from the amplifier to the + AND - of voice coil 1, then simply solder/crimp wire from the + and - on voice coil one to voice coil two (ensuring that + goes to + and - goes to negative)

This will ensure the coils are wired in Phase (which is very important) Hopefully that helps

Should be running in no time

[Note: Edited to correct my mistake, Thanks to bobqpsr]
