Heavy EQ?

Are there/What are the drawbacks of using heavy EQ (PEQ) on subs, be it sealed or otherwise.

More EQ on the low end - excursion problems, which can be solved by using a lesser amp, what else? Higher distortion?

Personally, I'd rather use a smaller amp, and EQ it (6 db? 10 db? When is too much, too much?)

Sorry for all the dumb questions, I've gotta learn somewhere.

Re: Heavy EQ?

well from what i know if you are Eq'ing the heck out of the low end you are going to need a ton of power especially in a sealed box.

When you say low end what are you talking? i am assuming like ~20hz range trying to get it up with everything else in a sealed box.

^ that will depend on what sub and setup you are using.

Why use a smaller amp? its always better to have extra wattage if needed especially to prevent clipping...

I don't have the PEQ yet, I'm still wondering if I should even get it because right now I've got a ported MAW15 (mach5) but I was going to seal this box up (it's ~4 cft) and add put in a 3-6 db PEQ 1Q bump at 20Hz to try to level some things up, but this sub doesn't have a whole lot of excursion, 13 oneway, so I was going to add another on the other side of this box in a few weeks, to compensate.

Bad idea?

An EQ will not solve the shortcomings of a smaller amp. For your sub to attain a given level of output, it will need a given amount of power, eq or not. Bump up the low end and suddenly you need MORE power from an amp, not less. Go with a big amp first, then when budget allows use an eq to tweak things out. Proper room position and a good design should get you pretty close. Oh, and too much is when things start to break

Re: Heavy EQ?

Boosting the low end will create a disproportionate increase in distortion, hurt the transient response, and require more beef from your amp. Sealing the port is probably the last thing you want to do in terms of getting additional low end output.

Re: Heavy EQ?

Also don't forget that if you do decide to add another driver to the same box, you're effectively cutting the Vb in half, so unless you've modeled it and it seems ok, that could cause you problems too.

If you're looking for more output, and you're thinking about adding another driver anyway, why not just build another identical box and stack them?
