12-15 inch DIY Subwoofer.

Id like to build a relatively compact (sealed maybe?) sub, 12-15 inch, powered with a proamp or plate amp.

Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the products sold this side of the pond (moved from UK to USA), so if anyone could recommend some good well priced drivers, that would be nice

Budget is circa $600 for parts not including cabinet.

If you think i could just buy something built that would be as good, point me in the right direction.

Despite the negative propaganda pushed across Europe, America is still the land of opportunity, and the free (and more importantly cheap home theater gear). Having been given the chance to move from the UK to America, I didn't think twice.

If i was capable in language, somewhere else in Europe would probably have been just as nice

Would this be strictly HT or HT and music? Also define "relatively compact".

HT only, no music being played on this system. Size isn't a huge issue, but I didn't want to go much larger than say a svs PB12-Plus/2.

Absolute performance low end is not my goal. A high quality, low(ish) cost first project is.

Rythmik has good reviews. The 15 inch sealed kit would definitely fill your requirements. A good choice.

The dayton 15" mk III from parts express is a very sweet theater sub and is in your price range.

My preference though is using an unpowered subs with a good external amp. I feel I get better bass management, which is really more important for music than theater subs in my opinion. It also allows me to more easily try new designs for the sub without as much fuss. I use an adcom amp, for my main theater setup in the living room and NAD amps in my office. I have also powered subs with a number of vintage amplifiers including McIntosh. Too bad I had to trade that amp for a rebuilt engine for my truck.

I'll second the Dayton Titanic's. I've heard some really good things about them.
