Dayton RSS390HF 14Hz Sub Project....

At the moment, I have a pair of Dayton DVC385-88 15" drivers that I'm using in a 6.3cf sealed push-pull configuration. I've looked at the 15" Titanic MkIII and ran the numbers though WinISD Pro, but these drivers don't offer anything better over what I already have. In fact, they are just about identical in the plots!

So I'm thinking of going with two 12.75cf ported enclosures tuned to 14Hz with a single RSS390HF in each. It looks like a pretty healthy combo in WinISD Pro being down -3dB @ 16Hz, but I would like it if someone else could also run the numbers to see what they come up with and what they think.

I measured the room response a while back and it came in pretty strong below 30Hz and lower. If these plots are anything close to what would actually be produced, then the in-room response would be a beast!

Please feel free to share your thoughts on this project as I will want to start planning everything out for the build.

Many thanks in advance!

Looks good. Xmax is reached at 20hz and at 12.3 hz with 160 watts. Average spl is 105db without room gain figured in. For the same price in the same size box you could also get the IXL-18.4.Try modelling it and see what you think. It's a lot of sub for the price, which includes shipping.

Sounds like an awesome project!

As far as amps go, the Behringer A 500 seems like a good fit. Assuming its at least 80% efficient, you're looking at about ~185 watts per channel. One channel per sub looks great since the driver will remain well below the 21mm xmech of the driver.

Of the 4 15" drivers i've owned, the RSS390 is my favorite even with only 14mm Xmax. In-room from listening position, frequency response is down 3db by 24hz (4ft^3 sealed enclosure). The same sub measures a -3db point of ~16-17hz at my computer chair. It is extremely linear, clean sounding sub with very satisfying top end frequency response, making it almost effortless to blend with the rest of my system.

If you don't have a BFD for your sub, get one fast!
If you don't have REW, get it now!

Hi Mike!

Say, I think you've sold me on the Mach5 sub. That 18.4 is exactly what I was originally looking for! However, I wouldn't exactly say they are the same price as the RSS390 since the 18.4 is $100 more each, but I think it's worth it. According to my plot in WinISD Pro, tuned to 14Hz in a 12.75cf enclosure gives me a near ruler-flat response right down to 17Hz... Nice!

As I said in a previous post, I already have a Crown amp that I'll be using. There's absolutely no reason to switch to something else. And don't get me wrong, I love Behringer products. I've been using their equipment for years and still am, and plan on buying some more, but the EP1500/2500 amps don't even come close to comparing to my XTi 1000 amp. Reliability, sound quality, build quality and overall specs, the Crown amp is top notch stuff, even if it is one of Crown's cheaper models.

And if I decide to go with the Mach5 drivers (which I most likely will), I'll be running 1000W into them as well, or at least have that power on tap.

Sorry, didn't notice you had an amp already...and would never ask a person to switch from one amp to another without a good reason. No need to explain to me how reliable they are, I am well aware. Nor did i intend to put Crown amps down in any way or form...Didn't mean to offend Now that thats out of the way....

Good luck on your project, looking forward to the outcome.

Yeah, my mistake on that. I thought the RSS390 was $199 plus shipping. I see now that they are $152 plus shipping. Anyhow, it's a big step up to a 18 from a 15. You'll like them!

No worries. I wasn't offended at all, just making a statement. Like I was saying though, I plan on buying some more Behringer equipment, such as a FBQ2496 for the subs, a DCX2496 crossover for the front 3 channels, an A500 amp for the center channel (bi-amping / midbass on 1 ch, treble on the other), and a DEQ2496 to replace my current DEQ1024 (which is also a great EQ).

A small price to pay for a "big" step.

Re: Dayton RSS390HF 14Hz Sub Project....

I'm a little late, but... I built a set set the RSHiFi 15"s in 325l sonos tuned to ~13.6Hz a year ago.

They are great. SQ is just right. At 361l you will lose a little more power handling than my set. My room is large and the subs are strong all the way to 10Hz, where my gear starts a steep roll-off, so I think even smaller say 300l might be the ticket.

Good luck with the Mach5 18".

Are you still planning on running two drivers or are you switching to a single 18"?

Re: Dayton RSS390HF 14Hz Sub Project....

I missed this one the first time around, too. Not sure what you're ultimate goal is here, Anamorphic, but if it's a little more low end output, did you consider trying a ported alignment for your current DVC15s?
