My XXLS Subwoofer building thread...

Hi All,

After much thought I've decided to use the following for my first subwoofer:

Peerless 830844 12" XXLS (4ohm)
Peerless 830548 Passive Radiator
Dayton HPSA1000 Plate Amplifier (500/8ohm, 1000/4ohm)

Cost: $950 AUD plus wood and finishing.

The box volume is 1.5 cubic feet (43L),

Internal dimensions: 14"x14"14" (35cmx35cmx35cm)

I'm using this design from Solen as a template:

Sample Solen Design

According to the Solen Design it will go down to 18hz and produce 122db at 25hz, this was based on a 240/8ohm, 370/4ohm amplifier, I'm hoping to get better results with triple the power in 4ohms.

I'm going to finish the box in Piano Black.

What you guys think?

You forgot to add in the cost of new windows and wall hangings. You may need them after firing it up. Take lots of pictures while building it. I would love to see the before during and after shots. Also, can you repost when you are done with the results of how it sounds.

That's models pretty impressively for such a small box, but you do pay a premium, at least in the US market.

I'd skip the 1000 watt amp, though. According to WinISD, 360 watts will drive the PR to Xmax at 24hz and below.

Regarding output expections, note that Solen's output numbers at 25hz do not describe the measurement conditions. They undoubtedly include room gain since the 1m ground plane simulation is 106.7db with 360 watts.

Keep us updated on the build.

-Brent

Yeah, you can't just increase power and get more SPL out of it. You need to model what makes sense. Especially if you're using a passive radiator, because then you'll easily bottom out the driver before you hit the 1000W provided by the amp.

Awesome, I love new build threads. Nick, do you know how you're going to do the piano black finish? I think the one generally accepted method is a LOT of work, but it can sure look fantastic when it's done right. So when can we expect some pictures??

Link doesn't work for me but seriously take a look at WinISD Pro. Plus, it's free to boot!

Am I the only one who finds WinISD's graph scaling annoying? I much prefer Unibox's.
What do you mean? You can adjust all of the graph ranges to taste and then scale is up to you based on how you size the graph window. Seems pretty flexible to me.
