| multiple constraints IB - which drivers? Hi folks - I realize this is the wrong forum to ask about a pair of puny 12" drivers, but there are several constraints to this setup: Space and position: likely maximum size 12" drivers in a front corner (because of narrow overlap with venting space behind). Narrow width also seems to preclude using a manifold, so drivers may have to mount in wall (firing into room). WAF: Two drivers near floor are out of direct sight line behind table. I might eventually add a second pair near ceiling (same vertical axis; can't put in other corner). SPL: A non-fixed screen (for a rear projector) would vibrate with huge standing waves. I want good low-end extension but will seldom try to play really loud. System details: The IB is to flesh out a 7.1 home theater installation. Will have six coaxials (Polk LC60s) mounted in ceiling and probably an non-ceiling center channel. [Haven't selected electronics yet so please point me to any threads on amp/driver pairing.] Room details: 15W x 23L x 7 to 11' angled ceiling, fairly reflective surfaces. Few resonance modes owing to openings in side and front walls (but attendant imaging problems; will need acoustic treatment for partial correction). Large closet behind drivers, openable to other room if more volume needed. Any suggestions for which drivers would work well for this setup? Thanks! | |||

| Re: multiple constraints IB - which drivers? So you want to do an IB with two 12" drivers? That really isn't a good idea. But, you might be able to pull off an in-wall ported sub, if you know what I mean. Tell me more about the closet, as far as the dimensions of it or if you'd be willing to build an enclosure behind the drivers in the closet. If you could do that, two Shiva-Xs in maybe a 450liter enclosure with a 30inch long 8" port would be pretty solid. See Rodny's thread for an example: http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...-makeover.html | |||

| Re: multiple constraints IB - which drivers? Hmmm, hadn't considered the alternative of an in-wall ported sub - good suggestion. I'll look into some of those threads. Still hoping to get the benefits of IB design, though. After perusal of various FAQs, guides, and project designs, looks like I might be able to solve the width constraint with a mini faceted "line array", viz. illustration in: http://home.comcast.net/~infinitelyb...Bmanifold.html Then I could put in four 12"s (still a little light for this size room), angled toward each other in a manifold not much taller than two in a front baffle. Haven't calculated size, but might be smaller than the 450 liter enclosure you estimate for a ported sub. I could fit either into one side of the closet, which is about 4' x 12' x 7.5'H (and openable into another room for additional venting). Thanks for the feedback - this is fun but a bit more consuming than I expected! | |||
