Exterior volume knob?

How hard would it be to have a sort of "exterior" gain knob, like a wired volume remote? I mean, I know it's possible, but what do I need, or do they sell them somewhere?

I'd like to have it in between my sub amp and my computer, so with either RCA or 3.5mm jacks (F-M) on the ends.

If I'm thinking correctly, a passive potentiometer wired in series would do what you want. Although I'm not sure how it would affect sound quality. Don't know if there are any off-the-shelf products that you can just buy to do what you want.

Re: Exterior volume knob?

I'd really like a DIY option, so I could have something sort of built into the hot spot, to change the volume. Like a 1 knob preamp, with rca/3.5mm jacks. I only know a bit about EE work, so I can't just think of what I'd need and stuff.

+1 for a potentiometer. If you are concerned about keeping impedence the same get an L-pad.

Re: Exterior volume knob?

So I have to put the Pot between my sub and and my amp with the speaker cable, set up as shown? As setup right now, I have my setup, set up (lol) like this

Computer > Receiver = Speakers > Sub amp = Sub.

I couldn't put the Pot between my computer and receiver using the red and white/black RCA cabling? Stupid question I suppose. >_>

Re: Exterior volume knob?

Not really following your > = chain, but you can stick it into your line-level outputs. So that's probably between the computer and receiver for you.

Re: Exterior volume knob?

Mike, you need to provide more information so people can help you better.

Are you trying to only adjust the volume of your subwoofer while not adjusting the other speakers?

Is your subwoofer hooked to your main speakers using what's known as ' speaker level ' connections as opposed to ' line level ' connections?

Re: Exterior volume knob?

Well I would like the Pot to control all volume being sent from my computer to my receiver. ( The sub amp is then hooked up to the audio out jack on my receiver ) so I could control system volume while not sitting right at my computer, as that's not the hot spot.

So a Pot through the RCA cables from my computer to my receiver (line level).

Sounds good to me. Thanks guys, I'll get right on that. Just have to find a cool knob.
