Plate amp for pro-sound subwoofer

Has anyone used a regular plate amp for a pro-sound subwoofer? If so, how well did it work? I'm thinking of doing this and can't think of a reason why it shouldn't work.

Re: Plate amp for pro-sound subwoofer

Agree, as long as the impedance is safe for the amp, there shouldn't be any issues. Give us more detail about this experiment...and tell us how it turns out.

Re: Plate amp for pro-sound subwoofer

This isn't something I've done yet, nor may do soon but something I've been curious about. Basically Elemental designs is selling their EHQS12's for $13 each. I've often thought about making some subs for my wife's band with this driver (as I've heard about a few DJs who use it in their rigs). Since a powered sub would be easier to set up I wondered if I could use a HT plate amp (which I'm familiar with) instead of getting a rack mounted pro-sound amp and digital crossover.

This is all very notional though. When I do this I may end up using two Eminenece 12" or 15" deltalites. Size and transportability is an issue with this future project and I'll probably go with the lightest and smallest option that gets the job done.

My main concerns would be if a HT plate amp could take the heat of being run all night and if they are durable enough to handle being transported often.

Re: Plate amp for pro-sound subwoofer

Now that you mention the potential use...transportation ruggedness is probably the biggest issue with a plate amp, as you've highlighted. For budgetary reasons, you might consider a car audio electronic crossover powered off a wall-wart to go with a traditional pro-sound amp.

How much output do they need? I used to help a friend's band as the "sound guy". Just coffee house type venues and a couple of outdoor party events. The only PA was for vocals and they were home speakers run off a mixer/amp combo. The bass and guitars used their respective combo amps and the drummer was au natural.
