just getting started

Hey everyone, I just signed up after being referred by ecoustics. I was very close to purchasing an HSU or SVS sub in the $400 range, but then was introduced to DIY. Now that I am interested I have been searching for the right driver/amp combination.

I am leaning toward a cylinder design, but am willing to go box if recommended. Could you guys point me in a direction for looking for quality drivers/amps and anything else I will need to purchase to kick this project off. My room is medium size.

My cousin has all the necessary tools for building so I only need to worry about the actual materials.

thanks everyone

Welcome.

The main things we need to know is what is you're budget, what kinda of performance you want, and how big the enclosure can be.

Re: just getting started

my budget would be $400 max, most of the stuff coming off ebay though. I am definetely a sound quality guy, I assume any setup will produce sufficient bass, so SQ is my main goal. I would like a product that could hit low 20's and with low distortion, but I also want a new Corvette among other things, so let me know if these qualities arent reachable with a $400 budget.
Also, my fiance is adament about my HT not being the "only thing in the room," considering my floorstanders are quite sizeable, so the enclosure would have to be reasonable. Somewhere in the 3-4 cubic feet range maybe, (let me know if this is not workable), but I figure some of the SVS models I looked at were in this range. As long as we stay away from the water-heater size enclosures ill be fine.

thanks for the help, and besides driver and amp is there anything else I should be looking for. Also let me know some actual models so I can start searching. thanks

If I were you I'd see if I could pick up one of these drivers:

What are your thoughts on amps? Are you looking for a plate amplifier or would a pro audio amp be suitable for you?
