Re: The bully sub...

Man, for the price of that bully I almost expect it to have a little bit more Xmax

$995 for just a driver? WOW

Quote from Carlos...

Quote:
A high end studio in Europe just installed a new mastering room for 5.1 sound (larger than the typical studio room), and even they only used four Bully drivers in a distributed IB configuration. The whole room can hit the 120’s down to 18Hz!
Is that good, bad, average? Just curious.

Depends on the studio size but 120db is a very respectable number. If the studio is fairly small, say 1,200 cubic feet I'd say that is average. If it was 3,200 cubic feet then that is pretty decent.

Thumbs down Re: The bully sub...

I wish I had four hands so I could give the performance/dollar ratios of the drivers mentioned in this thread four thumbs down

Re: The bully sub...

I totally agree Steve... the pricing is outrageous. There is so much available for less that will do just as good of a job or even better in some cases.

Re: The bully sub...

I don't see any advantage of the Bully sub over others available today for a lot less money. The 15" Dayton RS 15" drivers have better specs, although slightly lower xmax, for about half the price. For a bit more money, the Soundsplinter drivers would be hard to beat.

Re: The bully sub...

I agree with all that has been said ,I would not spend $900.00 on one subwoofer ,I think as already stated I would go with the soundsplinter or something from the new TC sound line up .

I had been interested in the Bully subs, but there seemed to be other low-distortion options hitting the market at a better price.

Ironically, this page from Bully's site has a "critical-listening" link that once showcased Monte Kay's Bully subs. Now it links to page that shows what replaced the Bullys in the system, the Dayton Reference Series 12" Hifi subs. Bully should keep up with their links.

Re: The bully sub...

I almost understand why the Bully might be so expensive. Its got over 20mm of Xmax while maintaining a relatively low inductance. Its no Dayton RSS390HF in the Le arena but it also has 6mm of Xmax over the Dayton.

120Db is a lot of bass, you don't want to be listening at that level for very long, last time I did that I had listened to music (not just on the sub) at 120Db for 30min I had ringing in my ears for a while after that.

Re: The bully sub...

I got an interesting email from Carlos at Accupower...

Quote:
Sonnie,

I am not sure you got our email earlier today. Parts-Express is no longer carrying the Bully Driver. The wanted way too much margin on it. The good news is that their sales price is no longer a factor. In addition, more Studio Monitor manufacturers are using the Bully driver in their products. What I am trying to say here is you are getting what you asked for….more or less.

The cost of the Bully 15” driver has been substantially reduced:

1 $325
2-3 $299
4-9 $279
10-20 $269
>20 Contact us

These prices include shipping via UPS ground in the U.S.. You said that IB guys buy 4-8 drivers. Well, now they can get the best 15” driver under $500.00 for less than $300, including shipping.

Keep in mind the Bully has a true coil overhang of 18mm per side. The 70% BL limit (most manufacturer’s X-MAX) is beyond it’s ability to move. In addition, there is a massive shorting ring in the Bully. These features, combined with a very linear suspension, give the Bully very low distortion. Honestly, I have looked at over 20 15” drivers recently, and none of them can touch the Bully’s power handling, output and freedom from distortion anywhere near this price. This has also been the determination of all the Studio Monitor manufacturers we have sent this driver to. Lastly, the lead out wires and other details of the construction make the driver noise free and very robust. We don’t generally talk about it, but the Bully also has a defect free reputation. Not a single unit has been returned or failed in the field, and it has been around for three years and is in many recording studios around the globe.

Given the actual costs of manufacturing, there is NO WAY this price can come down until we are actually into the several thousand of units per year, and that is unlikely to happen. If it does, we will be happy to pass on the savings.

Feel free to pass the news on.

Carlos

Thoughts? (Specs are in the initial post.)

If they want to sell them to us, I think they should send one free to ThomasW for evaulation. If he gives the thumbs up on it, I think a lot of people will buy one, two or more.

Re: The bully sub...

Interesting timing,

I just signed on to this forum today. I had not posted on any forums for many weeks (early July?) and Bosso told me about another thread on this site....anyhow.....

Thomas...just send me your address. I will be happy to send you a Bully Driver for evaluation purposes. We charge 200% interest per hour the driver goes beyond 30 days . As stated in my email to Sonnie above, studio monitor companies are chosing the Bully for it's very high value. It is not the best 15" driver in the world....that's the domian of the Acoupower driver, but the Bully really is a great value, and I am sure Thomas will agree. Our products stand on their own. I am sure you will like the driver.

Carlos
