Need some input--- Tweeter Choices

Ok... I'm going to do several designs with the Anarchy midwoofer and since I'm not going to stock everything, I can choose a couple different tweeters and price-points to match them with.

I was thinking in terms of a value, or budget build whereby we use a <$25 tweeter, and mid-priced build, with a $50 tweeter, and a cost is not an object build with whatever exotic device people want to throw money at.

So... I need some recommendations for tweeters people like and would like to see used. The midwoofer, is pretty easy to work with for almost any device that you would pair a 6.5" midwoofer with. The exceptions, I'd stick with crossover points less than 2.5K due to the break-up, and the fact that it is a 6.5" device. Other than that, the sky is the limit.

I have some ideas of what I'd pick myself but I'd like to hear from my customers.

I think as far as the best sounding low end tweets I have heard are probably a ferrofluid dome design.. I had some in some old infinty and the highs were pretty accurate.. Thats why I was glad to see the one used in the infinity center channel that I am working on now.

ScanSpeak 6600. Unless you custom design and build your own tweeter, I don't know of anything you can purchase that will outperform it.

Unfortunately I don't believe this crowd is willing to spend that much for their speakers.

The Vifa DX25 is a good unit. I'm not sure how many people would step-up to the SS 6600. Send me a pair and I'll design something with them.

Vifa D26NC55, DX25, or XT25 for the mid price range, they're all excellent.

Dayton ND28F or ND20F for the budget build.

No comments on the 'exotic' build, ScanSpeak does make some nice $200-plus drivers...

I have the Seas DXT tweeter, at $52 each already mounted to a baffle with the driver and measurements taken. From my early measurements, I don't see much reason to spend more than the Seas as it is an excellent performer and Seas has a very good history of consistency. The off-axis response on the horizontal plane is superb all the way out past +/-45 deg. The on-axis has a couple little wiggles from their dispersion trick but it isn't audible. The distortion measurements are very clean too. I will be putting a pair of these in my listening room.

I'm sure there are people who have a favorite device for one reason or another but I don't think there will be enough interest in $200 tweeters to justify doing a design.

I'll pick one inexpensive tweeter based upon feedback here, and my own preference (I get to make the final call) for people on a tight budget.

Kevin,

How will this compare to the Kepler speaker before it? I was looking long & hard at that design, but i was a little too late.

Re: Need some input--- Tweeter Choices

I did a design with the Seas DXT and the old EX-6.5 which may illustrate how good the Seas DXT can be in a good design.

These are actual measurements, no smoothing, measured about 1.5M from the loudspeaker, suspended by my fork-lift in the parking lot of my warehouse. They are good clean measurements down to about 150-200Hz. Under that, the choice of gating makes the data unreliable so I tend to truncate the data around 200Hz for that reason.

The thing to note, is the response above 2K, which is almost purely the tweeter response + the crossover design. The notch at 1.5K was a problem I had with the EX-6.5. The Anarchy still has a narrowing response of a 6.5" device, but the little notch isn't in the measurement. I'm not sure how audible that little narrow band notch was. The small dips like that almost disappear with smoothing and a notch is much less of an audible issue than a peak, but none the less it won't be in the final design.

This is about 20 deg. off-axis.

Null when the tweeter polarity is reversed. Shows how nice the acoustic slope matches the theoretical perfect and indicates smooth phase through the crossover region.

This is 35 deg. off-axis.

And 45 deg off-axis.

Wayyyy out to the side at 75 deg off axis.

With the Anarchy, I can remove that little dip @ 1.5K, but the rest of the response would be pretty much the same. Hard to beat that kind of response in a 2-way of this size.

Wow....impressive. How difficult would it be to do an onwall version that can go under my plasma (over the fire place)? I'm itchin' for a new project, but I know very little about designing passive crossovers.
