Tempest X-2 EZ slot port BUILT!

Good afternoon everyone. My brother in law and I built my box the other day and it is time to show the progress. The box is currently with my neighbor who owns a custom car shop and is putting a coat of bedliner on it.

I must admit however that I am not too terribly proud of the workmanship but I think it will do for a first attempt. I followed the dimensions provided by Kevin in this http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...slot-port.html thread. Only a single sheet of 4'X8' MDF was used. My dimensions ended up a little different and yielded 5.7^3 ft and close to 6^ft with 80% polyfill.

We performed this task with the following tools; Skil-saw, jigsaw, hand held beltsander, finishing nail gun. I know most of you use clamps but I was rather impatient and didn't want to wait. Instead, we glued and nailed the pieces together and I predrilled a few holes on each piece and screwed them snug, knowing that any imperfections would be covered by the bedliner coating.

Pics:

Just getting started.

Cutting the hole for the amp.

All pieces cut now ready for assembly.

Partially Assembled

Test fit of the

Bracing - does it need more holes???

T-nuts used

Almost finished...although with the wrong amp

Hardware used to fasten the sub.

I will post the final product when I get it back....

Finished but not yet in its final resting place...

Thanks for checking it out...

Brian

Looks good. Have you modified the amp's Hi-Pass filter yet?

According to Kevin I don't have to...I am willing to depending on the gains. What would be gained?

Thanks

I missed the part in the design thread stating the sub works well with the stock HPF. You can get a bit more output at 20 hz if you're willing to modify it.

If that is the BASH amp, it needs to be modified. I think the stock corner frequency is 30Hz. You need to have it set to around 18Hz with a Q = .8 or less.

Yes, I see you were referring to the PE 500 and 1000 watts amps that work well with the stock HPF, not the Bash amp.

Oh man...I thought you were talking about the BASH....you mean I should have purchased the Dayton HPSA500W?

I have read through the BASH tables http://www.parts-express.com/pdf/300-752.pdf and unfortunately I am not sure what resistors to buy/replace...

Hi MovieNut, it isn't paint. It is bedliner applied professionally. My neighbor has a shop and did it for me.

looks very good! is that slot port less than the rest of the side? will that affect tuning?

It is the face of the box that should be inside instead of on the outside. I got in such a hurry and glued/nailed it...plus it was really late.

With these size enclosures and ports, a 3/4" difference in length tends to make little difference one way or another.

Re: Tempest X-2 EZ slot port BUILT!

Nice build.

I am looking to build the exact same setup in the coming weeks once I get the funding.

Have you tried it out yet? If so, how do you like the performance?

This will be my first build, fortunately, this design doesn't look to complicated to build and the results should be great!

This exact same design can be done with the port firing to the rear. It is sometimes difficult to finish the inside of the slot port (paint it before you glue it together) and if you prefer not to see the port, it can just fire to the rear over the top of the amp.

bigdisu1: It hits hard and sounds great but since I have the wrong amp it doesn't go very low...we watched about 10 minutes of Letter of Iwojima and it seemed as though we were onsite. The sub is quite impressive and I look forward to putting the correct amp in when it arrives.

Go for it.

Re: Tempest X-2 EZ slot port BUILT!

Thanks for the info from both of you.

Another question. What is the best amp to use. Hagarr, I saw you tried the BASH and then you said you were going to try the Dayton HPSA500.

Excuse my ignorance on this part, but in the design notes (http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...slot-port.html), Kevin suggests the PE 500, but I but I cannot find the PE500 online, I just don't think I know what i am looking for

The Dayton HPSA500 is the correct amp. The notes just weren't clear enough (for me) before I ordered.

I also have them in stock now to remove any ambiguity in the proper amp. They are $250 shipped anywhere in the USA UPS GND. I should have them on the web site within the next couple days.

When you get the new amp, if you could, write a reply and let us know you thoughts. I am really interested in your opinion after you get it set up the way you wanted.

Thanks!

What other subs (if any) have you had a chance to compare to? By the way, those cuts are pretty impressive considering no table saw

Re: Tempest X-2 EZ slot port BUILT!

Ok, I have had the HSPA500 amp for a day or two so allow me to give you my impressions. I first had a HSU STF-2 10" ported sub. Nice sub but lacked in the 60hz+ arena no matter what I did. Great little sub though...

Since I have been sick with my wife and kid out of town I have had the last two days to play with the TempestX-2 and watch too much media. I am very pleased with the outcome. I am hearing/feeling frequencies I hadn't before. The sound quality is better/sharper and naturally the quantity is far more than I had or even need. But none of this is about need is it...I have a brand new house with a 14X16X(10-11)vaulted funny ceiling media room. Where I previously had bass dead spots there is envelopment. I will now need to work on making things rattle-proof, i.e. sconces in media room, door down the hallway, etc.

I continue to push the setup to check the limit but have yet to find it. I recall Kevin mentioning that this 500W will never reach the subs max but I still try to be conservative.

So, I watched War of the Worlds, Transformers, Dark Knight, and Hulk. Now I may not be able to watch movies while my kid is sleeping... She has been used to the STF-2 since birth but this is another world.

Current settings: I ran Audyssey with the gain on the amp at 60% and haven't touched it. All other settings on the amp are all the way down. Haven't played with the parametric EQ or anything else yet. Not too sure what to do there but I'll figure it out.

Thanks Kevin for a great sub!

Any questions?

Brian

Brian,

Good.... sounds like you have enough output for your room. If you have Audyssey measuring and adjusting the sub, you shouldn't need the PEQ setting on the plate amp. Leave it alone once you run the Audyssey.
