We were given a pair of Pioneer CS-G301WA 11 speakers. 12" woofers, 4.74" mid-ranges and 2.63" tweeters. The back connection is a push-in-the-wire type.

The woofers have foam rot and I have cleaned off the old foam and glue where the brittle surrounds used to be, so I can order replacements. I have never done this before, but I found a how-to at this forum with some good step-by-step pictures. My husband has replaced the entire cones on our other pair of speakers, so if I need help, I can call him. :D

But, I am curious as to what I encountered next. I hooked up these 120 watt speakers to my JVC receiver (1981 model, with capacity of 150 watts output) to see how they sound. There is distorted sound coming from the woofers, and when I gently hold the out edge of the cone to stabilize it, the sound comes out more true, as my action somewhat acts like the surrounds. I would expect this, as the surrounds are rotted away. But, there is no sound coming from either pair of mid-ranges or tweets. I can see no tears or holes. There is an electronic connection inside the cabinet, and I'm not sure what this is called - the crossover? It's just a little circuit board with a coil of copper wire wound round and a couple of capacitors. It appears in good condition - no leaks form the capacitors, if that is what they are called. The connections (spade connectors) all look good. I'm not sure how to diagnose this problem. The fellow that gave them to us said they just needed new foam edges. I am new at hi-fi and home theatre, and don't know anything about amplifiers, or the like. All of our equipment is a bit dated.

We have a volt meter tester, and can test the speaker wires, I think? (husband isn't home at the moment) I do get sound from our cabinet 2-way speakers when I use the same wiring connections to the back of the receiver.

Carbon fibre is a very light, stiff and rigid material. The body of a Formula 1 racing car is made of carbon fibre, Loudspeaker companies have toyed with the use of carbon fibre in loudspeakers, mainly for the use in cabinets. Carbon fibre cone drive units are rarely seen and used, we believe the type of carbon fibre and its preparation that we are using is unique.

For the past year ProAc has been researching the use of pure carbon fibre due to its qualities and resonances in the manufacture of drive unit cones. Its incredible stiffness makes it ideal for a drive unit cone, and its piston like qualities are perfect for moving air at low frequencies without distortion.

The new Carbon Pro Eight uses two carbon fibre coned bass drivers, a carbon fibre midrange horn and a carbon composite plinth. With these attributes the cabinet size can be reduced greatly without losing the weight and slam of a much larger conventional loudspeaker.The cabinet on the Carbon Pro Eight is a traditional mixture from ProAc of HDF materials of different thickness's heavily damped with bitumen. Indeed the carcass including bitumen is 35 mm thick. The combination of research into carbon fibre and its ingredients have produced a stunningly accurate and detailed loudspeaker, having an electrostatic or panel quality without the drawbacks. Sound is reproduced effortlessly with incredible detail and pinpoint imagery, which often can be muddled by conventional drive units.

We are sure at ProAc you will not see this type of drive unit in any other high-end loudspeaker and you will be amazed at such an open accurate and natural sound with a fast potent bass response.

I can't believe that my speakers sound so much better using 16g instead of 10g. It has me baffled. The difference is like night and day. I have read many time that using lower gauge wire is better and produces a better sound but not in this case. The receiver is rated a 75w per channel. So i am thinking that since it a low wattage per channel that not enough power was sent to the mains and center because of the bigger gauge wire. Is their truth to this. I currently have bose cube speakers. I have a 2.1 setup which cant be upgraded to 5.1 unless I buy a whole new system. Im looking to sell my bose system and sort out my own system. Ive built my own subwoofer, but now im looking to buy some new small speakers to replace the bose, but I would like them to have better mid range response, but the size must be kept small, because my university room is tiny!

So i have just made the shift (from dissatisfaction) from Walmart RCA $150 system to something hopefully more enjoyable.

We have a worship room in my dorm and I am simply looking for a nice system that will "fill" the room with music. Our Dorm rooms are maybe 15x20 feet and I have a comfortable $350-500 to spend. I will only be plugging up an Ipod to the AVR and playing music through it. However, I really want it loud enough so people can sing as loud as they want w/o being heard :P...

So far I've been interested in:

AVR: Yamaha RX-V363

No particular reason except price and relatively good reviews. I'm completely open to something else.

Does this look good?

How much will I have to spend on wiring? Is it pretty tough?
