I have a pretty short list including:
* component video inputs
* component video upconversion
* 4 ohm stable preferred

I'm sure many of you could suggest a lot of features I haven't considered. Which features matter to you? And in particular, which do you consider to be indispensible?

Just as the title states, I'm looking for a cheap receiver that can pull audio from an HDMI source.

I have my TV mounted to the wall, and I ran HDMI cables through the wall when I was putting drywall up. I want to run my XBOX360 through my receiver, but my current Harmon Karmon AVR147 doesn't pull audio through HDMI, and my XBOX doesn't have another source for audio.

I've done some searching on the forum, but I haven't seen someone looking for some as basic as that.

I'm just looking for 5.1, doesn't have to be super powerful, and some type of Dolby Pro Logic II. Probably looking to spend less than $300.

Thanks for any suggestion you guys may have.

Features:

7 ch Discrete Analog Amplifier (50 watts x 7) in Slim Design Chassis

HDMI 1.3 x4 Inputs / x1 Output

Decoding of Dolby TrueHD, dts-HD Master Audio

Video Converter for All Analog Sources to HDMI

Independent Audio Board for Improved Sound

Simple Set-up with MRAC Auto Calibration

Component Video x3 Inputs / x1 Output

Analog Audio Inputs x5, Digital Audio Inputs x3

Marantz Remote D-Bus In/Out Jacks

Detachable Power Cord

On Screen Display for Setup through HDMI out

Glow Key, Precode Remote Control

I just bought this two days ago and I am still learning the intricacy of the setup and calibration - I'll be able to give a better review once I've had time to real dig into it's nuances.

However, at first glance: I do like the look and full of the receiver - I was surprised by how short this receiver truly was. The Harman Kardon AVR154 that I previously owned was easily double the height.

The OSD is easy to configure - I did have to allow for alittle acclimation as it was slightly different than the H/K OSD - with that said, the Marantz OSD seemed dumbed down and remedial...perhaps it simply doesn't need as much configuring head-room...I'm not sure yet. I'll continue to tinker.

The audio codecs shine here - full suite of Dolby and DTS, including the TrueHD and Master Audio lossless codecs. I have set up my two other surrounds for full 7.1 and perhaps that is why Dolby Digital ES sounded much more dramatic than when I switch to TrueHD (Bourne Ultimatum) ... again, some tinkering is in store.

Let's talk about what I don't like: no pre-amp outs mean no headroom for expansion in the amplification area (which I may not need since the room I currently have setup doesn't need that much power pumped through the soundstage....unless I'm trying to peel paint off the walls!)
Secondly, no 5.1 analog inputs...however, since I am going full HDMI, this isn't really a huge issue.
Third: no zone two or zone three. Again, since I'm planning on doing 7.1, this isn't a show stopper - however, I was kinda looking forward to setting up a second area, perhaps the back patio, with some speakers.

Buying the Marantz over the H/K AVR1600 or even the more feature-rich AVR254 was truly a leap of faith. I've heard of the brand name, I like what I've heard about them, yet there were some sacrifices when I picked it out. If worse comes to worse, I still have a highly desirable brand name that will serve me well in the 2nd-hand sell-off area. Let's hope it shines, so I don't have re-wire!

I'll submit another review once I've had time to truly settle it in - till then, I remain luke warm.

Hi,

Ive built my own sub woofer with integrated O-audio bash plate amp. I currently have a 2.1 setup with 2x Gallo Orb speakers but im looking to expand this system to a 5.1 or 7.1 setup. Most of the time the sound will be coming out my computer. Ive been told that I need an amplifer and not a receiver, and also that a separate amplifier will usually out perform a receiver in the same price range. Is this true?

My budget is around $100-$350. I would like something that can do the job, sound great, and in an ideal world look pretty cool too, since it will be on display. Can anyone recommend me one?

James

P.s Im also in the UK so it needs to run on 240V

*_In Detail

In Detail

Since the early 1990’s, Arcam has been dedicated to bringing high fidelity sound to the world of home cinema. Using audio technology usually reserved for audiophile stereo equipment, Arcam have pushed the boundaries for combined music and movie reproduction. The AV8 and AV9 AV processors have won numerous awards for sound and video quality around the world while Arcam’s audiophile AV receivers have gained wide critical acclaim in the more affordable sector.

Wolfson 8741 Digital to Analogue converters are deployed across all eight channels bringing ultra linear conversion of digital audio signals. Individual, multi-regulated power supplies feed all critical audio stages with studio grade Burr Brown DRV134 balanced line drivers used for balanced audio outputs to drive longer cable runs or active speaker configurations with extreme fidelity

To help eliminate the large volume jumps often found in broadcast TV sound user selectable Dolby Volume* processing is included, a world’s first for an AV processor. In addition Dolby Volume includes programme dependant tonal correction to deliver a richer, more realistic sound experience at low listening levels.

The AV888s internal video processing delivers sublime video using broadcast quality scaling and frame rate conversion from Pixelworks. Up-conversion of all video inputs to HDMI output at all commonly used standard or high definition resolutions is possible making system integration a simple affair. Full RS232 and IR connectivity are deployed along with IP control and dedicated interface for control and audiophile playback of iPods using the rDock or rLead.

Arcam’s world wide reputation for sound quality has come from over thirty years of experience and legendary attention to detail. All of this experience has been brought to bear in the development of the AV888 and as a result its sound quality is simply world-class. No matter what the program material, from the most explosive block blockbuster action to the most subtle musical detail, the AV888 will delivers simply breathtaking performance

In Detail

Having gained a world class reputation for amplifier design over thirty years, Arcam introduce the P777 multi channel amplifier for home cinema and music reproduction. Using technology honed thorough the development of dozens of award winning amplifiers, the P777 is the company’s highest performing multi channel amplifier yet.

Subtle detail is retrieved with startling realism even though the P777 is a true power house amplifier with huge output potential. Over 1.6kW of continuously available power is available to drive loudspeakers with clarity and precision and control. Substantial heat sinking and a computer controlled fan cooling system ensure it remains cool even under extreme duress with an predominantly aluminium construction ensuring chassis temperatures are kept low while electro-magnetic interference is kept away from delicate audio signals.

The Two oversize toroid power transformers feed the seven power amplifier channels with separate secondary windings for each channel. The centre channel, often the most important as it carries dialogue information, is fed from both transformers for maximum performance. “Soft Start” circuit is deployed to reduce inrush load on the incoming mains supply at switch-on with the toroid standby transformer and control circuits kept in their own aluminium enclosure for additional screening.

The P777 is one of the finest multi channel amplifiers in the world and is specifically designed for the most ardent home cinema enthusiast or advanced custom installer. Available in black or silver finish, the P777 comes with Arcam’s five year FMJ warranty.

Onkyo TX-NR807 Description

The TX-NR807 brings together the very latest mid-range home-theatre functionality and adds one major upgrade: networking capability. An Ethernet port on the TX-NR807 allows it to receive and output audio files playing in real-time on your PC. Alternatively, you can bypass your PC and enjoy a direct connection to streaming internet radio stations such as Last.fm* and vTuner. Naturally, the TX-NR807 also handles all of your high-definition audio and video sources - courtesy of six HDMI™ 1.3a inputs - and upscales any video input to 1080p via Faroudja DCDi Cinema™. This powerful THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified receiver also comes with Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz, two new surround-sound formats that expand the spatial dimensionality of games and movies. Meanwhile, Audyssey roomcorrection and equalization technologies help ensure a convincing and detailed audio performance, regardless of the volume level or the shape of your room. An intelligent customizable remote controller puts the finishing touch to what is another benchmark-setting allround performer from Onkyo.

The Arcam AVR500 sits just below the multi award winning Arcam AVR600 and delivers a new level of performance to this...

The Arcam AVR500 sits just below the multi award winning Arcam AVR600 and delivers a new level of performance to this market. This means Arcam’s AVR500 will also be taking on the might of Onkyo, Denon and Marantz with its new av receiver – amplifier!

Using 7 x 100 watt per channel and all of Arcam’s technical ability the AVR500 will rise to the challenge and we are sure will also steal some sales from it’s big brother the Arcam AVR600.

With movies, the AVR500 like the AVR600 is a perfectly tuned piece of audio engineering. Its perfectly timed beats and wonderfully balanced harmonies helps the AVR500 nurtured the perfect movie sounds, which lets your emotions flow.

For the traditionalist the AVR500 also includes all the finesse of the AVR600, delivering a truly uncomplicated yet accomplished hifi audio sound, which easily leave many true two channel stereo amplifiers in the shade.
