UP BluRay Movie review

As with all Pixar/Disney movies there is a high expectation of quality, UP delivers once again.

UP turned a new leaf by making it much more personal and real. There are several points throughout the movie that tugs at your heart strings and even makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.

Carl Fredericksen (voice by Ed Asner) is an old retired balloon sales man who has wanted to travel to see Paradise Falls in South America but never gets the chance to do so with the love of his life, his wife befor she passes and now realizes that he must get away or spend the rest of his life watching time pass by. A knock on his front door and a bad reaction to a construction worker changes all that.

There were a couple of times during the movie that I found myself thinking "ok now lets get moving with the story" as they seemed to get hung up on meaningless stuff. But it only lasts a few minutes and again picks up the pace.

I have not viewed the extras but the 4 disc pack has a second BluRay disc full of extras including an 8 part documentary on the wilds including the Paradise Falls in South America in HD. I will add more to this after I have viewed them tonight.

The 4 disc pack also includes the standard DVD and a digital copy for the iPod or other meda device.

There were many times where the line between real and animated was blurred, I had to take two or three close looks to make sure that they really were animated and not the real thing. Pixar needs to be given more recognition for the hard work they put into the detail of not only the characters but the backgrounds.

As with most BluRay movies the quality was superb with great color and contrast.

Audio: :4stars:

DTS MA 5.1

This movie used the surround channels very well but did not have a lot of low end punch there is a thunderstorm that really hit hard and a part where they are being chased by a pack of dogs that had some low end hits but other than that it was fairly subdued. I thought that the soundtrack was very good full of music that added to the feel of the scene.

Over all UP is a great family movie and even if you dont have children it is entertaining and a great addition to a collection.

'It’ was amazing. In a completely objective kind of way. Honestly. Okay, Okay, as a number one ‘MJ’ fan, I have to say I was more than a little apprehensive about seeing the movie ‘THIS IS IT’. This film promised ultimate highlights and a ‘vivid’ ‘inside’ picture of what MJ's now ill fated 50 date tour would have been like. As we all know the tour did not go ahead, so the decision was made by the musical director of the tour - Kenny Ortega (who by the way, ever so slightly got on my nerves throughout the duration of the film), to tirelessly pad through hours of rehearsal footage and edit this into a ‘movie’, giving fans a glimpse at what would have been. The editing is by no means seamless, but I found the splicing together of the different rehearsal sequences for each song interesting (the more facets and insight the better for me) others may find it disconcerting.
Attachment 16872
For almost two hours, viewers are treated to a performance melody of Jackson’s famous hits, and are privy to a Michael Jackson that has rarely been seen in recent times. He is seemingly healthy, focussed, firm and in control of what - by all appearances, would have been one amazing show. Gone is the softly spoken ‘wacko’ as many perceived him to be, instead viewers watch a man clearly in his element – a creative perfectionist who speaks in a deeper firm voice, knows what he wants and will not stop until perfection is delivered to his other love-his fans. I, as I’m sure most viewers were – was eagle eyed throughout the showing – on the look out for any signs of fragility or cracks in his demeanour that perhaps I didn’t/should have spotted prior to his passing- however, there are none to be found. MJ is shown singing live vocal, showcasing his sublime cd quality, one of kind, virile and unique rock chops. All his signature moves –the moonwalk, thriller routine, body popping, are all executed as hoped. There are some notable omissions from the showcased set list (BAD, REMEMBER the time), however you don’t necessarily miss these songs while watching the film. While this really is a must see for his loyal fans (bringing ‘closure’ if you will), those who have never been particularly bothered by the genius that was the King of Pop, should probably give this one a miss

This is the third movie in this animated series and is very entertaining.
As with most sequels like this you can usually expect it to be not as funny as the first but this one actually surprised me and has a lot to keep a person amused.

There is lots of action and is full of punchlines and spoofs. Although this movie may seem to be directed at kids it seems that the writers are clearly aiming at an older crowd. Our 2 and 5 year old were actually frightened in several scenes of the movie and I don't think allot of the humor is even good for younger ears to hear. It surprises me that its promoted as a movie for the entire family because of some of the sexual and potty humor that is prominent throughout. Don't get me wrong its very funny and my wife and I laughed many many times. I just don't think younger children should be hearing it.

Video: :3.5stars:
This is a typical animation with lots of detail and as usual the BluRay shows its stuff with sharp clean and vibrant colors. There was no noticeable shuddering during fast pans that some animated movies seem to exhibit and there is good contrast in the darkened scenes.

Audio: :3stars:
DTS MA 7.1
There are more and more movies taking advantage of the full potential of 7.1 channels. There was plenty of use of the surround channels and the mix was clean and dynamic. I would have given it another half a star but there was one thing that bothered me and that was even though there was several times where there was some serious sub channel usage, there were times that I thought there could have been more. One notable exception is the big T-Rex when it put its foot down several times the entire room (and house) shook so I am sure that it was down in the 10Hz range.

Over all this movie is great, humorous and full of drama however it is not the greatest for some of the sexual funnies and parents should be aware of this before letting there children see it as you may find it objectionable.
