Thought I would bounce this off of the forum members and see what you think. So I started to construct MDF and drywall isolation boxes for my can lights and got to thinking about installing them. I don't really want to purchase the sound isolation clips to mount the boxes as it will end up costing upwards of $150 and any miscalculation in mounting depth and I would not get a tight seal between the box and the first layer of drywall.

I am thinking that I will be able to suspend the boxes by a single bolt in the top of the box, or perhaps some 12 gauge wire. The boxes would be effectively just hanging in space 1/2" or so below the level of the first layer of the drywall. Then when I install the first layer of sheet rock I would liberally apply a thick bead of silenseal around the edge of the box. When the sheet rock is installed the weight of the boxes will glue them to the first layer of drywall. Then I can trim the drywall and remove the bolt or wire and seal the hole..install the lights, and continue with the next layer of sheet rock.

It seems to me that this would be the most effective way to decouple the boxes from my joists as the boxes would be glued to the sheetrock.

Am I missing something?

Newb here...

I'm curious how many, if there are any, folks have designed and built outdoor projection theater situations.

I'm pretty used to large format concert production and recording studio stuff, so I know I'm up for a real challenge.

The situation is that we have a decent sized firepit area, directly adjacent to our recording studio. I'd like to create a projection screen situation where we can project on the side of the building and either do a traditional stereo or possibly 5.1 system.

I know I'll need to be looking into waterproof enclosures and all kinds of stuff... but as far as appropriate gear, set-up, interconnect, etc... I'm gonna be on the downside of knowing much more than how to tie my shoes.

Any thoughts on how to get started down this minor path of insanity?

Thanx!

OK, I have two daylight windows in my theater room that when the room was unfinished, I just used a spring loaded curtain rod and black fleece to keep the sunlight out. Well with the walls painted and carpeting being put down tonight, I thought I might want to go with something classier, but still block out the sunlight.

Any ideas? Should I put in something nice looking and then also put the fleece between that and the window?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Well after several year of dreaming about a HT and a steady outflow of cash acquiring nice AV equipment I am ready to take...

Well after several year of dreaming about a HT and a steady outflow of cash acquiring nice AV equipment I am ready to take the plunge and convert my beloved basement shop into a home theater/ "go down in the basement and get of my hair room" for the two children. :wits-end:

I do have a decent knowledge base from forum trolling and completing quite a bit of remodeling and construction work over the years. That said, there are still a myriad of questions circling around in my head about various things. So, I'll guess I'll start with where I am at now and lob a few questions out there. I just started last week to get the basement ready for refinishing.. Like installing a vapor barrier, digging out spot for egress window in the back corner, moving ventilation ducts and cold air returns to eliminate ugly soffits.. Basically the dirty work.

The thought was to have one half of the room for theater and game playing and the back half for socializing, kid playing, etc.

The finished basement space is currently planned to be 16' wide and 28' long with a ceiling height that is rather low..I want to say it is going to end up being 7'. Is this dimension a nightmare for sound because it is divisible by a common denominator?

I am framing in 2x4 walls approximately 1/2" inside the concrete walls with- R13 insulation. In an attempt to decouple these walls I wanted them to be attached to the concrete wall and the sill plate only instead of the first floor joists. I figured that the sill plate has quite a bit of mass and dampening..after all, its an old growth fir 6x6 and it has a whole house sitting on it. (Is this going to be sufficient?--How much better would isolation clips attached tot he foundation walls work?)

My thought for the ceiling is two layers of 5/8 with GG. GG on all the joists before installation. I am also going to either install fiberglass batts in the joists bays (likely) or blow in cellulose after the drywall is up (less likely). (I would really like to be able to play my SVS sub above wife listening levels without shaking the whole house). I can afford to loose ceiling height so clips and track are out. Flooring will be Vapor barrier, T&G plywood, padding and carpet.

For lighting I am thinking can lights, a sconce or two and rope lighting inside small crown molding.

Seating will not likely be "real" theater seating but simply a wrap around couch.

My audio gear consists of :

Polk RTI 8 mains, Polk Csi A4 center, umm forgot the surround models..they are small polks. Onkyo Sr607 receiver, SVS Pc-12NSD subwoofer---(moo awesome BTW), samsung blue ray, xbox 360, Hd cable box. blah blah blah.

A couple questions.. Is a projector suitable for everyday viewing of TV? WE don't watch tons of TV but wonder if the big screen is fatiguing? Does it have to be absolutely dark to get a decent picture? It would be nice to have some lights on for the kids to play in one half of the room and me watch some TV. Perhaps I should build a divider wall similar to..http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...ggestions.html

Do the reasonably priced projectors (around $1,000) in my case provide high quality pictures? I'm looking for something on par to my samsung LCD.

Would love to hear any comments or suggestions... Especially about my short ceiling height. Would like to go with a 100" screen. I'm looking to build something really nice..as that is just how I roll but I am also trying to keep things within a reasonable budget.

Funny that I just spent the winter months building this media cabinet... and now I'll probably but all my AV gear in a built in . siggghhhhh Anybody want a custom built bubinga and curly maple media cabinet?

Hi all,

I thought I'd crosspost some info from my introduction post for folks who didn't see it:

Hello Everyone,

My name is Frank and I have been doing an equipment upgrade to my 2001 lineup. We purchased a new home a year ago and I've got some time to try changing my current TV/Movie viewing area into a bit more of a home theater. Basement room, half of it is under grade, about 12 feet wide, 8 feet high(other than where the soffit runs), and about 22 feet deep.

I've got a 5020 Pioneer Kuro and a wall mount ready to go, a Denon 3808ci that I use for AVR and no seperate Amp, A collection of Polk RTiA series of speakers coming(no sub, that's the one hold over for now from the old system, a 150 watt 10" yamaha powered sub) that I'm going to use in a 7.1 configuration.

I'd like to do up a nice fabric wall system and a few acoustic treatments and I'm looking for some advice.

I'm planning on doing a fabric wall around the entire space with a few faux columns to put sconces on. I need to block a couple of windows and doors and figured that 4'x8' fabric panels french cleated to the existing drywall walls and maybe magnetically attached at the bottom would be the best marriage of aesthetics and access to places I don't want permanently covered.

I guess my big question is do I want to back those panels with damping material, something like the OC703 that I read about in the DIY acoustic treatment threads? I'm planning on fronting them with muslin, maybe a plum color, we've got some purplish furniture that's currently in our living room upstairs that I think I'd like to swap out with the super sized sectional we have in the TV room right now.

Thanks

I have finally come up with some ideas to treat a large door for sound proofing and acoustic reflections by creating custom 2 sided acoustic panels for the dual purpose.

The each door is about 80 x 30 and there are two connected doors.

I cant treat the entire area for practical reasons so taking out for the door knob I have 24 x 40 to work with on the top and 24 x 30 to work with on the bottom of each door.

On the internal side both will have 4" of extra dense rock wool with fabric stapled to a plywood backing. The sound blocking/mass loading back side is where I need help.

All options will be done to the back of the plywood attached to the acoustic panel

Option 1:
a layer of green glue then adding a second piece of plywood, whole panel screwed directly into door

Option 2:
1/8" mass loaded vinyl then adding a second piece of plywood, whole panel screwed directly into door

Option 3:
add 1cm of edead (rubber butyl) to the back of the single piece of plywood and space it off the door by an inch

I am new to speaker placement for surround sound. I have a room that is approximately 13' x 11' with 9' ceiling. I would like to put in a 5.1 system, but my room technically only has 3 walls. I live in a condo so the right hand side of the room has no wall and is exposed to the kitchen. I have seen placement of the rear speakers on the back of the side wall facing towards the center of the room. This would not be possible for me since there is no wall to put the speaker on. Do I loose quality buy putting the speakers on the back wall facing the TV? I have also seen speakers on the ceiling facing down. What would be the most ideal setup for speaker placement? Does this depend on the type of speaker I buy?
