Hello to all,
I am new to this site and I need advice and info if anyone has it. Years ago when I worked for Circuit City during its' hayday (mid 80's - early 90's) the factory reps would come around at the Holidays and offer the sales crew incentives for selling their products. I fell in love with the DCM Time Frames and purchased two pair of TF-600's (through the factory incentive program) which I currently own. I knew they also made a TF-1000 but didn't consider it at the time since I didn't have the room or the power necessary to drive them accurately. I vaguely remember the DCM rep saying something about a monster they were going to create in the Time Frame line but I never heard anything else about them nor did I ever see any evidence that they existed. That is until last week. A good friend sent me a link to a craig's list posting of a pair of (what I thought was a typo) DCM Time Frame 2000's. After I realized and verified what they were I jumped on them like an Ethiopian at a free buffet. I now own these monolithic beasts which were in pristine condition thanks to an avid audiophile. I know very little about these monsters and I want to know the full back story as well as the specifications. I own a Harmon Kardon Home Theater receiver with 45 watts per and it does a decent job at driving them at low levels. I would never crank them up with this receiver for fear of clipping so I need some advice on what kind of power amp to buy in order to hear these things at their full potential. Surely someone out there knows about these speakers. All I do know is a fellow by the name of Steve Eberbach is key to their creation. I also see he is a member of this site. I do not wish to disturb him so if anyone knows him or converses with him on a regular basis please mention to him that I am desperately curious for any and all information he could be so gracious as to provide. For right now I am content to rent a copy of 2001 A Space Odyssey and let the monkeys dance around them. I welcome any and all advice from you guys and girls who know a lot more about this than I. Thank You all in advance.
MM
Thank You all in advance for your help.
Sincerely, M. Myrick

Here is our IHSS (In Home Stereo System) :) I know... ceiling speakers suck and typically do not have the best sound; I did not really get to pick the speakers since the people who wired the house basically picked what they always use... I did pick the placement of the speakers in the ceiling. I tinned all of the ends of the wires, picked and setup all of the equipment, and installed all of the rockwool, activated charcoal in the enclosures in the ceilings. Everything has been EQ'd with REW too :D I also use my ear-EQ system, based on the equal loudness curves at 80 db (ISO 226:2003) as a 'house curve' of sorts... Everything has also been EQ'd using REW on a per-channel basis; so every speaker has its own unique eq, except for in the kitchen where there are 4 speakers (2 in parallel) so they use an average of each channel :D

The speakers used are MTX H825C's. The amplifier is a Crown CTS-8200 (200 watts/ch @ 8 ohms) with a Crown K1 driving the subwoofers. Everything is EQ'd crossed/over using a Crown USM-810. The USM-810 is driven by a Shure Auxpander 8x8 matrix mixer which can route any input to any channel in the house. The sources are a Numark HDCD1 (sort of like a big ipod with 2 outputs), a Tascam Radio tuner, and an 1/8" jack for an ipod, computer or whatever else you would want to plug in.

Here is a bag of activated charcoal :) An idea taken from KEF, activated charcoal helps at lower frequencies to increase the apparent size of the box... also the weight hopefully will help deaden some resonances from the gypsum board...

The Backboxx things typically would not be very good however the entire attic area (on the drywall) has been coated with a hard polyurethane foam (vapor barrier) which gives it better stiffness, the barrier is a bit like "Great Stuff" found at hardware stores, but ~1" thick.
The tweeters are adjustable, They are all angled at 15 degrees 'inward' (toward the opposite channel) for uniformity; I used a modified laser pointer which was fixed on top of the dome tweeters to help point the tweeters at the correct point on the floor...

Hi,

We were given a pair of Pioneer CS-G301WA 11 speakers. 12" woofers, 4.74" mid-ranges and 2.63" tweeters. The back connection is a push-in-the-wire type.

The woofers have foam rot and I have cleaned off the old foam and glue where the brittle surrounds used to be, so I can order replacements. I have never done this before, but I found a how-to at this forum with some good step-by-step pictures. My husband has replaced the entire cones on our other pair of speakers, so if I need help, I can call him. :D

But, I am curious as to what I encountered next. I hooked up these 120 watt speakers to my JVC receiver (1981 model, with capacity of 150 watts output) to see how they sound. There is distorted sound coming from the woofers, and when I gently hold the out edge of the cone to stabilize it, the sound comes out more true, as my action somewhat acts like the surrounds. I would expect this, as the surrounds are rotted away. But, there is no sound coming from either pair of mid-ranges or tweets. I can see no tears or holes. There is an electronic connection inside the cabinet, and I'm not sure what this is called - the crossover? It's just a little circuit board with a coil of copper wire wound round and a couple of capacitors. It appears in good condition - no leaks form the capacitors, if that is what they are called. The connections (spade connectors) all look good. I'm not sure how to diagnose this problem. The fellow that gave them to us said they just needed new foam edges. I am new at hi-fi and home theatre, and don't know anything about amplifiers, or the like. All of our equipment is a bit dated.

We have a volt meter tester, and can test the speaker wires, I think? (husband isn't home at the moment) I do get sound from our cabinet 2-way speakers when I use the same wiring connections to the back of the receiver.

Thanks for looking over our problem. Much appreciated.
Regards, Leesa

Anyway,I am having problem and that is sometimes I get signal noise like 1kHz tone while playback on DVD or watching TV.What kind of trouble I am having? Do you have any idea? I checked my connections over and over but I couldn't get rid of this signal noise coming from speakers.

By the way,My amplifier is yamaha (JX-V463) and my speakers are Jamo (S506HCS3).I just want to know what could be the possibilities that cause it.

Details:

The ProAc Tablette Reference Eight bookshelf speaker, launched in 2001, has proved a hugely successful restatement of the original Tablette design of 1979. Reborn in its earliest cabinet configuration but housing far more technically refined and powerful drive units, it produces a scale and quality of sound unimaginable over two decades ago. Now however, this enduring design scales new heights with the ProAc Reference Eight Signature.

At the heart of this major leap forward is a remarkable new bass/midrange driver. Four times as expensive as the standard unit used in the ProAc Reference Eight, this new driver incorporates a neodymium bar magnet, copper rings and a copper phase plug. These components add up to vastly improved performance, with even greater linearity and lower distortion. The bass is more excitingly dynamic and the midrange considerably more open. Loading is by small twin reflex ports which reduce unwanted colouration.

A high quality crossover network is coupled directly to the terminals to eradicate any deterioration in the signal paths. This redesigned board incorporates a larger bass inductor than the original Tablette and gives higher output with lower distortion. The crossover knits the midrange seamlessly to the output of the completely new tweeter, a sophisticated 1" soft dome unit with a large surround which produces an exceptionally flat response, outstanding smoothness and fine detail.

The cabinet itself is made from costly marine birch ply which is critically damped and tuned with high grade acoustic material. As ever with ProAc loudspeakers, the ProAc Reference Eight Signatures are completed by exquisite real wood veneer, but in keeping with their exclusivity are only available in the most exotic finishes.

The Tablette Reference Eight Signature is a definitive monitor level design. The remarkably flat frequency response is characterised by a smooth, natural and detailed output delivered with a surprising level of power, weight and scale. This diminutive powerhouse can be placed on shelves or ledges, but for true high-end listening is best mounted on heavy rigid stands.

Manufacturer: ProAc
Description: ProAc Carbon Pro Eight stereo speakers

Carbon fibre is a very light, stiff and rigid material. The body of a Formula 1 racing car is made of carbon fibre, Loudspeaker companies have toyed with the use of carbon fibre in loudspeakers, mainly for the use in cabinets. Carbon fibre cone drive units are rarely seen and used, we believe the type of carbon fibre and its preparation that we are using is unique.

For the past year ProAc has been researching the use of pure carbon fibre due to its qualities and resonances in the manufacture of drive unit cones. Its incredible stiffness makes it ideal for a drive unit cone, and its piston like qualities are perfect for moving air at low frequencies without distortion.

The new Carbon Pro Eight uses two carbon fibre coned bass drivers, a carbon fibre midrange horn and a carbon composite plinth. The carbon cone is unique with a pure polymer impregnated carbon weave and polished diaphragm, the back of the cone is then specially lacquered and finally it is concentrically
weighted to add appropriate mass. The 3 inch midrange dome is repositioned in the unique pure polymer impregnated carbon weave and polished horn, and midrange sounds are reproduced with uncanny realism. High frequencies are covered by the ProAc ribbon tweeter with a diaphragm lighter than a human hair giving a sweet and detailed reproduction.

With these attributes the cabinet size can be reduced greatly without losing the weight and slam of a much larger conventional loudspeaker. The cabinet on the Carbon Pro Eight is a traditional mixture from ProAc of HDF materials of different thickness's heavily damped with bitumen. Indeed the carcass including bitumen is 35 mm thick. The combination of research into carbon fibre and its ingredients have produced a stunningly accurate and detailed loudspeaker, having an electrostatic or panel quality without the drawbacks. Sound is reproduced effortlessly with incredible detail and pinpoint imagery, which often can be muddled by conventional drive units.

We are sure at ProAc you will not see this type of drive unit in any other high-end loudspeaker and you will be amazed at such an open accurate and natural sound with a fast potent bass response.

Hello, I have a quick question. I just set up my home theater which I have had put in storage for a while. I could not find my 10 gauge wire's for my mains and center so I used 16 gauge instead. I can't believe that my speakers sound so much better using 16g instead of 10g. It has me baffled. The difference is like night and day. I have read many time that using lower gauge wire is better and produces a better sound but not in this case. The receiver is rated a 75w per channel. So i am thinking that since it a low wattage per channel that not enough power was sent to the mains and center because of the bigger gauge wire. Is their truth to this. I need clarification on this issue. Thanks! Here is a list of my equipment
Yamaha RX-v630
Boston acoustic CR series fronts, center, and surrounds
SVS PB-12/2 Subwoofer

I currently have a pretty high end speaker setup, with Dali Euphonia MS4 fronts and CS4 center.

I am using it primarily for movies and gaming these days. I'm very happy with the sound I'm getting, but that's alot of bound capital. I'm thinking I might go for some cheaper pro-style cinema speakers like the JBL 8340A or something similar. How lousy will that be compared to my current system? I'm not so concerned with looks, I can hide the speakers behind curtains or something.

I'm more concerned with selling my current system (with the inherent loss) and then getting a system I can't live with...

Good mid range - Any of these suitable?

Hi!

I currently have bose cube speakers. I have a 2.1 setup which cant be upgraded to 5.1 unless I buy a whole new system. Im looking to sell my bose system and sort out my own system. Ive built my own subwoofer, but now im looking to buy some new small speakers to replace the bose, but I would like them to have better mid range response, but the size must be kept small, because my university room is tiny!

Here are the speakers that I have looked at as alternatives to the bose cubes without compromising on the size:

Anthony Gallo

Orb Audio

Can anyone give me any input on these? I know they may not perform as well as a larger speaker, but im a bit stuck on space. If there are options I havent included above, please let me know of the name so I can look into it.
