hello everybody, I am looking for driver and details on enclosure design. i have been in contact with old tc sounds, now audiopulse, for advice. They have a speaker that won't come out until January called the LMSR. According to TC sounds this is going to be a very good driver. I have been looking at SVS and HSU subs and decided I would like to make my own. Because this driver from audio pulse is long delivery I an looking for alternate high end drivers and plate amp box design etc. The subs I was interested in from svs and hsu are pb 13 ultra and uls 15 (for size) Would anybody be able to recommend a driver that would compete with that of the ultra and help me with a box design and combination? All this being said, am I better of just to buy a ULS 15 or VTF3MK3 or PB 13 Ultra? It's all for hometheatre use 2800 sq ft room. As I am a cabinet maker I am most interested in making my own but lack the knowledge on what products to choose and would appreciate any advice , Thanks

I have just bought an Onkyo 7.1 receiver, and I'm thinking of building my own DIY surrounds using car speakers.

Surrounds are not so demanding in frequency extremes and levels, so smaller boxes can be used as well as full range speakers. Car speakers have similar limitations, and can be found in different shapes as single, coaxials or triaxials.

Has anyone built such stuff and is willing to comment about them?

Are there any similar projects in the web to go have a look?

A variation of this would be to investigate dipoles used for the surrounds, also using car speakers.

I recently moved into a new office space. There are speakers installed throughout the office, with volume controls for each room located in central mechanical space. Before purchasing the office space, I noticed that the prior tenant had a receiver located in this room, which he ran satellite radio through. I would like to do the same thing but an not familiar with this wiring system. There are two cables coming out of the wall where the receiver used to sit. Each cable has 4 wires (red, green, white and black). I know this is probably a stupid question for most of you, but how do I connect this. I am used to having to deal with a R+/- and a L+/- when tying speakers into a receiver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey guys
Im building a 5.1 surround system with the dayton rs drivers. Ive designed the enclosures and baffle layout and have started designing crossovers.
Unfortunately, I cant decide what to do with the grills. I thought about making them myself, with some grill cloth from parts express and making frames, but i dont know. I dont want plain rectangular cloth grills. Id like something a little fancier. Im putting effort into making the enclosures look good, and i dont want the grills to ruin them.

I was thinking either brushed aluminum or stainless steel or something that looks cool. The front baffles are going to be around 4" by 12" and around 6" by 18", give or take.

If anyone has any suggestions or links or anything at all I'm all ears. Ive googled a few things and havent come up with anything good.

I'll try to get some pics of my progress

Hey, I'm trying to put together a full 5.0 speaker system for my ht and will begin with upgrading my mains, possibly front three. I'm hoping to get some feedback on the feasibility of this plan.

I've been reading this thread regarding active system design. What I really want to do is build a fully active 2.5 way TMWW using the anarchy 6.5's for the M & W in mains that can handle whole-house filling stereo for music, without being monkey-coffins.

I'd like to use the two lower 6.5's for W duties, and run them 25hz-300/400hz, using the active xover's 25hz hpf, as Kevin of DIY recommended and port them at 30hz as he did. Then use a lone 6.5" as the midrange, with a tweeter up top. Now, I have an samson s-convert to boost signal to an active crossover (a Behringer CX3400 3way, or the like). I was going to pick up a samson 4060 amp (4x60w @4ohm) to power the tweeters and mids (not sure about this idea). I have a samson 550 amp (2x285w @4ohm) to use for the woofers..

One of the concerns I have is whether the samson 4ch amp will be enough for the highs & mids. As an alternative, I could use the signal from the active crossover sent to the samson 4ch amp (bridged into 2x120W @8ohm) and drive the TM in a ~2.5khz 2 way passive crossover setup. Another concern I have is expandability, specifically, adding a nice center to this pair without having to revamp everything not too far down the road.

Perhaps there is a better way I am unaware of, but would appreciate feedback-thanks! :dumbcrazy:

Hi All,

I'm getting really interested in speakers, speaker building, subwoofer building, etc. The question the keeps coming to mind is why would I buy/build a full range speaker or even a speaker that extends below 80 Hz when we all know how much we all love subwoofers here on HT shack. Seems to me that anything below 80 Hz is irrelevant when you incorporate a sub(s).

I've heard the arguments about being able to locate the sub and at what frequency that is possible etc. The simple fact is that subwoofers are cheap (in my limited experience) compared to designing a speaker to achieve true full range. I'd rather build two in stereo. You can buy two cheap subs for around $400 and put your bookshelves on them.

Additionally, I'm curious about the output capabilities of different bookshelf speakers. Should I rely on power handling? If a certain speaker has a 5 1/2 inch woofer and can extend down to 80 Hz will it yield the same impact as a 7 inch driver with the same frequency response at the same power levels? This part is confusing. Seems like the 7" should dominate but frequency response charts are always at low levels.

I like my music at high levels. I want maximum impact. But that doesn't mean that I want fullrange speakers if I'm gonna have a subwoofer anyway.

Advice?? Wisdom??
Thank you

I've noticed that the Dayton 701 Usher speaker kits are on sale at Parts Express. Does anybody have any experience with these? Do they sell these kits without the enclousures? I could make the enclousures myself from bich ply but I like the fact that they are easy to put together since everything is included in the kit and electronics is not my strong point.

I will like to upgrade the Omnisats V2 speakers I'm using right now which are nice but not enough for my big room. Also, if I can make the enclousures, can I make the front speakers towers with these kits instead of bookshelves? Can the enclousures be sealed or they need to be ported? I could buy three of these for the front speakers but what could I use for the rear? I would like something small for the rears if possible. Anyways, these kits should be a big improvement over the Omnisats, right? I also like the fact that for my budget of around $1,000, I could build a 5.0 speaker set-up. Finally, I have 120 watts per speaker and my crossover will be in the 80-100hz range.

The horn is good for 20 watts the array id good for 300 watts (thou why one would want 300 watts of 10 K hz I don't know)
Well, there are now 4 pictures in the "sub woofer and speaker project" gallery. But, I can't access them.

DIY Guitar Cab Tuning Help

Ok, I built a guitar cab and have run into a problem, I need some opinions on how to tune the bass part of the cab. I made...

Ok, I built a guitar cab and have run into a problem, I need some opinions on how to tune the bass part of the cab. I made it completely sealed and with two compartments inside, top for highs, bottom for lows.
The speakers resonance frequency is 48hz so I would like to aim for that if possible (and unless it will muddy up the sound too much)

Here are some pics of the cab, you'll see what i'm talking about
http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/e...drew-skaterrr/

The bass is way too quiet, especially since the Man O' Wars have a 5db higher SPL. So I want to port it. The only spots are in between the speakers, in the middle vertical of each other as you can see. I can fit a 3" diameter port on top and bottom, and if I had to I could squeeze in a 2" diameter in the bottom left and right, or some kind of combo of them all.

The internal dimensions of the box are 13⅜"h x 28½"w x 11⅜" deep = a volume of 2.5 ft^3
The bracing is ¾" h x 1½" w and has a total length of 106" = a volume of .069 ft^3
So the volume of the box would be 2.431 ft^3

I need to know how I would calculate the volume of the 1½" foam, the inductor, and the front loaded drivers (baffle wood is ¾" thick)

Here are the specs of the drivers:
http://eminence.com/bassguitar_speak...2&SUB_CAT_ID=5

There are two drivers (obviously) so the port will have to be tuned for 300w.

I know it's a lot of stuff to comprehend, but that's why I'm here on HTS.

Just tell me if I forgot to post some information, or have any comments on the cab too.

I read somwhere that this may result a better phase response at crossover frequency. No need to reverse polarity with tweeters and mids.

I was recommended the Parts-Express Tritrix kit, but now I see that Kevin Haskins a new speaker for fairly cheap ($40 or so before importing cots, blah blah blah) called Anarchy, and it looks impressive. So, my question is, if I were to build a pair of towers, mtm, etc.. with the Anarchy, how would it compare to the Tritrix kit, While keeping the cost the same or below the Tritrix cost for a pair?? I don't know twetters very well, so what tweeter and crossover would needed for Kevin's speakers to make them comparable it to the Tritrix for the same or cheaper price??

Thanks for any help guys.
