The BFD (Behringer Feedback Destroyer: DSP1124p and FBQ2496) are very popular electronic devices used as parametric equalizers to tame the response of your home theater or home audio subwoofer. Learn how to install, connect and setup the BFD... all the answers are right here! This is the forum to also discuss other electronic equalization devices such as the Behringer DEQ2496 and DCX2496, the Anti-Mode 8033, SMS-1... and others.

Are there any affordable multi-channel DSP-based equalization units?

Since Audyssey equalization is available in receivers costing less than $1000, I had hoped that it would be available in a standalone format for less than that. Unfortunately, the least expensive version that I've found on the Audyssey Web site seems to be about $2500 plus whatever is charged for labor by a certified installer.

I've found comparable proprietary units by other companies, but they all seem to cost even more ($5000-$7000).

I'm currently using an AudioControl Bijou THX graphic equalizer, which is entirely manual.

Hey guys. I've been interested in getting a simple bass management device for my IB sub that includes a SSF. Like most of you, I use a pro amp to power my subwoofer. Like many of you, I've often wondered if my amp was receiving a powerful enough signal from the sub out from my receiver to function at it's best. Reckhorn has a product called the B2 that could fill my needs. If interested, check out a PDF of the Users Manual. As you can see in the links, the B2 has a user adjustable 4th order SSF that can theoretically be set as low as 10Hz. It also has a user adjustable one octive parametric EQ filter that can boost the signal at the chosen frequency up to 12 dB. Lastly, it has gain control. Since most devices with gain control are unity gain (that is they only cut gain), I had hopes that this device would be different.

So... I contacted Reckhorn regarding their B2 device via e-mail, and this was the exchange...

Quote:

I live in America and purchased the B2 Bass Management device yesterday through Bob Reimer at CSS in Canada. I have one question regarding it's gain conrol. Does the B2 have + and - gain control or is it just an attenuator?

The MAIN LEVEL is the gain control. At 12:00 o'clock = straight up the gain is about 0 dB: input = output signal. From 12:00 - 17:00 you can increase output signal up to 10 volts.

Quote:

I have an infinite baffle subwoofer and am looking forward to protecting the drivers from the really low frequencies... not to mention using the parametric boost at 20Hz. Having + and - gain control would be really nice since the subwoofer is powered by a pro amp but I'm using a consumer A/V receiver.

Yes, this exactly is the purpose of B-2. Many users buy it for the variable SUBSONIC only. Every subwoofer will sound better when you filter iddle / blind power = what your amp produces but your speaker cannnot deliver. Very important for bass reflex as well: below the port tuning frequency the response curves goes down sharply - but the amp is still pumping lower frequency power into the speaker voice coil which heats up resulting in thermal compresion (higher impedance of hot coils) and eventually burning. Many use it for smaller speakers like 3-5" full range. These speakers are good for one point source but the X-max. is short = very limited bass capability. If you set the SUBCSONIC just as high as you hear slightly less bass than this is the right setting where the speaker is limited and should be relaxed from those iddle power. This will also keep yur amp cooler or you have more reserve to have more power reserve for the audible range. Do not underestimate the variable / parametric BOOST LEVEL. You can extend bass about 1/2 octave. The trick is a well set combination with SUBSONIC. .

So... the B2 has:

1. A user adjustable SSF that can go as low as 10Hz
2. A user adjustable one band, one octive parametric EQ filter that can boost the signal up to 12dB
3. A gain adjustment knob that can decrease gain, but also increase it up to 10v

Sonnie has a B2 that he uses and has found that the SSF when set to 10Hz actually performs like it is set to 12Hz. That tells me this device has a lot of potential, but is not as accurate as it could be. To get around this, all one has to do is to run closed curcuit sweeps with REW to see what the various adjustments really do. Considering what we already do with REW when setting up our BFDs, that should be pretty simple. Then we modify our SSF and low frequency boost settings based on what WinISD recommends for our subwoofers given how many watts we send each drivers.

Based on my needs and what I've heard so far, I went ahead and ordered a B2 for my HT. It will take a while to get it set up (I recently moved), but I'll report back once my HT is properly installed. This device could work really well for sealed subs, IB subs, ported subs (LLT or otherwise) and large main speakers alike.

I have just ordered a Danley DTS-10 Tapped Horn Subwoofer Kit, the same one that Ricci & Brandonnash have recently gotten. http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...-thread-3.html

This will be my first subwoofer and it will be used with an old 2.0 receiver that does not have a sub out. (A more modern receiver is probably a couple of years away.) My mains are 3 way Klipschorns. I will probably get an EP2500 or EP4000 amp for the sub.

It seems that I need both a crossover and equalization. After reading a LOT of forum posts on the topic it looks like the Behringer DCX2496 will be my most cost effective and proper solution as I can do both functions in one unit.

Before placing an order I would sure appreciate some feedback as to whether or not I am doing the best thing.

Thanks very much.
i am currently in the process of eq'ing my sub, it does need it, thats for sure.

I would also like to hipass my mains with a behr. dcx 2496, but if im am correct it cant be done if my mains dont run on a separete poweramp as the behringer need the signal from the surroundamp?

is there a problem with the behr getting its signal from the dvd player instead of getting it from the surround amp?

my surround amp is purist analog surround amplifier with no bass management or anything!

FBQ 2496 Owners - Help With Status Display

I'm hoping someone who uses the FBQ can help me understand what the status display should look like when the PEQ filters are operating. When I set the filters and measure I get the same measurement curve as when the FBQ is in bypass mode, so the equalization is not happening. I can't determine whether I have programed something wrong or if the unit is not working properly.

On brucek's suggestion I tested a filter by running a sine wave at 60hz and then set a filter to attenuate the frequency. The filter did attenuate the signal so that suggests the unit is working, so what might I be doing wrong?

From page 6 of the manual:

Status Display

A constantly lit LED signalizes:

A filter is in the Parametric EQ mode (PEG), whereby gain has to be set to a value either higher or lower than 0 dB. A LED that only periodically blinks signalizes the selected filter is in the PEQ mode.
The LED that corresponds to the filters I have set do not blink - they remain constantly lit. I would be greatly appreciative if a user could tell me how the unit should 'look' when it is operating in PEQ mode -- do the LEDs blink?

Hi guys, I'm looking for a parametric EQ to use with my guitar rack. I'm not after any PEQ becouse my idea is to mimic cabinet impulse responses with it. I know it's weird but stay with me as I try to explain.

My lead sound relies on a tiny cabinet with a 10" speaker but that is the only sound I can get from it and all my other sounds come from a big 2x12" cab wich is far more flat "frequencywise". So, if I can get close enough to the 10" cab with the EQ and then send that to the 2x12 I'll be good to go.

I've been tweaking the REW and came pretty close to the IR i took from the 1x10 so I got really exited with the BFD.

I have three questions:

1. Do you think it could work?

2. Would it be possible to run the signal into one channel then into the other an then to the poweramp to get 24 bands?

3. I can get a DSP1100 (not Pro) really cheap, it doesn't have XLR in/outs but I wont be using them anyway, is it a good choice?

Thanks a lot

For a bit of background information my active speakers have a selectable low pass output crossover point of 40Hz. Would people normally go for a mono setup or stereo with two subs?
FEEDBACK DESTROYER PRO DSP1124P - £70 approx

FEEDBACK DESTROYER PRO FBQ2496 - £120 approx

ULTRADRIVE PRO DCX2496 £220

ANTI MODE 8033 - £240

The first one seems to quite popular but am worried about the frequency response only starting at 20hz. What about frequencies below this as I am sure mine will hit a bit below that. How does that get measured. The second one has an auto facility on it from what I have read which would be handle with the option of manually tuning it. The third has a frequency response starting at 10hz and the Anti mode is 16hz. Does all this really make much difference.

Opinions would be appreciated please.

cheers
