Hello folks.

I'm working on two different horn designs that will be barn burners and lease breakers. I started working on them in June so this is not a me to Danley thread. These two offerings are legitimate front loaded horns. Not tapped horns. They both when loaded into a corner have response that will be just under 100db/watt. They will both be using one TRIO12. Here is the difference. The big boy is here:

Little boy is here:

The astute among you will notice my definition of little and big has a bit of a twisted sense of humor to it. Once folded into a real box they are 16 cubic feet and 9.5 cubic feet.

I know am I crazy. If you have to ask then it isn't obvious! Here is why I'm so crazy. Here is the maximum SPL for each box.

BIG BOY

LITTLE BOY

The ripples in the response generally clear out into the room wash. So don't pay to much attention to them. Both boxes are long enough that if you EQ them they will not readily go into over excursion. Both posted max SPL are done in 1 Pi space. This is on purpose I understand that .5 Pi is a true corner. But few of us have a completely reflective concrete corner to put this into. If you do strap on another 3db on top. Both simulations are peaked out at 18mm X-max. This driver can do a clean 20 and over excursion to 22mm. So there is room for a bit more than 2 db more. Add in room gain and these boxes are almost flat to 20hz and 16 hz. So these are some real contenders. Definitly not available commercially. Oh did I mention that with 100 watts they can crack 120 db! muhhahahahha:R:R:R:R:R:R:R

Them that are interested vote. The one with the most votes is the one I build. This is a benevolent dictatorship after all!

Mark

Assistance with selecting a sub

I'm looking into putting together my first diy sub for my home, but am not sure what I should be looking for.

My current setup includes a BIC America F12 sub that, while decent for the money I spent, does not cut it for watching movies even at lower levels. I believe the problem is that the low end extension starts dropping off a cliff at around 30hz or so.

With young kids around, I don't get to listen much at higher volumes, though do enjoy good punch and extension on those rare occasions that I do get to crank it up. 50% music 50% movies.

My room is fairly large 23x18x8 and opens into other parts of the house.

The sub will be placed along one wall either two thirds of the way from the front of the room (next to the couch) and I have a 36h x 20w x 18d space to play with. Those measurements are the absolute max dimensions including grilles, feet, plate amps, etc.

I'm looking for the best bang for my buck, and would like to keep the budget to $500 or so, but could stretch it a tad.

I'm liking the SDX-10 projects I've seen around here and would go that route, but am wondering if there is another build using the SD12 that may be more appropriate for my room size. I'm just having a hard time thinking that the 10 would be able to dig deep and play at a decent volume.

I am a total WINISD noob so please bear with me.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Aloha!

SD12 Passive Radiaitor Sub Build

After some help from Mike and others, I decided on building the CSS Trio 12 kit for my HT. I'm following the PDF available...

After some help from Mike and others, I decided on building the CSS Trio 12 kit for my HT. I'm following the PDF available on their site, with just a few minor modifications. Wood and time have been donated by one of my friends, and he's really helping me out through the woodworking bits.

Anyway, after waiting a few weeks, the SD12 finally arrived. Then after waiting a few MORE weeks for my friend with the wood shop to become available, we're finally making some progress. I'm not much of a woodworking guy, so I'm fortunate to have two friends who can help me out with this stuff. I figured you lot would like to see some of the fancy equipment we had available though, so I took a few pictures.

We're starting with 48x96" plywood here, so we started with a panel saw. A lot nicer than working through a 4 foot cut with a circular saw. The rest of the steps are pretty self explanatory looking at the pictures. We decided to change a few of the joints to change what seams would be most visible. The bottom is now fully within the side walls so that the sides won't have a joint before the bottom. The front is on top of the other sides. We used rounded corners for the bracing to add a bit of support. I'm adding pine to the inside corners to increase the surface area for gluing and insure a nice air-tight box. Other than that, it's right out of the plans.

I'm not sure if I want to stain the box or paint it. As per my original plans, I bought primer and silver paint (I have silver L/C/R speakers), but now that I can see the size of this thing I'm not sure I want a big silver box on my floor. Decisions, decisions. If anyone has pictures of a large silver subwoofer I wouldn't mind seeing them.

Hopefully I'll be wrapping up the cutting and doing the gluing and screwing on Sunday. Then I can plug this thing in and see what to expect from the finished product. :hsd: Hopefully I can get this thing working, even if it isn't painted, in time for Thanksgiving to show off a little.

That's all for now!

By the way, I'm not in any of these pictures. Maybe I'll do one of me and the sub when it's all done.

Hi, I was looking at buliding a new sub. Something sealed with a couple PR's to help keep the overall size small. Right now I have a SDX-15 sub and a ep-2500. I was looking at WinISD and was thinking of something around 3.5 to 4 ft3. As for the PR's I saw the 18" 2100g ones at CSS and the 15" 1400 grams and have no idea what to pick. I have never used PR's and dont know a whole lot about them. Im interested in what others have used. Thanks!!

Not a big console gamer, but I went to a friend's house with another friend last night. Both of them are big into PS3...

Not a big console gamer, but I went to a friend's house with another friend last night. Both of them are big into PS3 gaming and are always bickering back and forth (puke). Anyways, the guy who's house were at has a sweet setup for gaming (Optoma HD20, 110" screen, Energy 7.1 surround system, PS3, Xbox 360). Pretty cool. He was running an Energy 10" that he got from FutureShop for like a grand (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0099010&catid=). Sounded ok, not that impressive to use DIY-ers, obviously.

Anyways, upon leaving, I could tell my other buddy wasn't at all happy with his setup so I got to talking with him about beefing up his low end DIY-style. This got him all excited, of course and I said I would look into it. He's not rich, but there is NO WAF, no size limitations, but only a $350 budget. Wood is free, parts, terminals, labour, etc etc is also free. So basically $350 for amp and driver. I got to thinking about making an SDX10 in a 12" sonotube, maybe 60-70L, tuned to 21hz with a BASH300. Possible? Would it sound any good? This is strictly for gaming and some movies, but I'd like to go as low and clean as possible...

The one bonus is the room its going in is tiny. 9 foot ceilings, but the room is only 9' x 11'. Carpeted floor, one door that's closed during gaming sessions.

What do you guys think? Will a sonotubed SDX10 with a 3" or 4" port dig below 20hz with any force?
