Dave, first off... get your surrounds and centre hooked back up! Even if you're going to replace them soon, it makes the movies so much better!

Second... great to hear how well it's turning out for you. And I also LOVE Live Free or Die Hard for bass, I had no idea it would be that good, but I used it to test my Buttkickers and that beginning shootout in the apartment was just incredible.
Well, before I watched the movie I did hook up my center. I was going to hook up the rears to but the wife is complaining that she is having her sisters wedding party this weekend and it doesn't look good blah blah. Well, that and soon we are mounting the plasma so we would have to move them anyways <---point I used to not mount them. I am sure having the rears hooked up would have been so much better but hey...I can watch it again!

Can do! I moved it to the bottom of netflix waiting for the bluray version seeing how hd-dvd is and Michael Bay loves bluray but I guess that will probably be a bit. On that topic, someone yell at Peter Jackson to get off his butt and transfer LOTR's to bluray!!!

I 100% agree with Owen that center is needed. I had a setup for more than 3 or 4 years without center. I have made myself believe that I really don't need a center speaker. Well, I borrowed my wife's speaker. The speaker was alright. I put it in as a center. Behold! The movie's audio is more real, like 3d. I really can't believe that I told myself that I don't need center. The sound is more enveloping. You should try the surround effects of "House of Flying Daggers" where the guy was throwing beans/nuts to the drums. That scene's surround effect and LFE is phenomenal. The "The Hero" movie also had a very similar scene but this time, he was running in the air in circle to cut the thread of the bamboos. Just try it! Oh, the Blade II in DTS is also very nice. The scene where the person was doing a 360 degree gunshots to all the vampires. That scene's surround effect is amazing!

Anyways, have fun!

Dave,

I posted this at your avsforum thread.

Congrats! Now rent the War of the Worlds and watch chapter 5, 6 and 12.
Also download DTS Demo #6 version 2. I added a menu to this demo disc. It's easier now to navigate. I really love "Flight of the Phoenix" because I can really feel air flowing thru me(even if the sub is sitting on a concrete slab). That is how wicked it is! I also love "The Haunting in DTS". Love "Minority Report". The shotgun's LFE was an enveloping LFE. If you want your eyes to blur, then play the fight at Jurassic Park included on this same disc. Honestly, most of the scenes on DEMO DISC #6 is awesome!

Anyways, just grab it and let us know.

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!!

Re: The Dave's Fi IB Quad 18" Build Thread

Trying to get the demo disc now.

Well, I got the ladder out and ran some near field measurements as promised. I held the mic in the manifold.

I tried not to have my body be in front of the manifold as much as possible. I ran 4 sweeps with the mic in

between the top 2 subs, 4 in between the bottom 2, and 4 with the mic about 4" in front of the manifold

centered for the most part.

Top measurement

Bottom measurement

Front measurement

Averaged measurement

Re: The Dave's Fi IB Quad 18" Build Thread

I heard some feedback from some (Thomas W) that the low end rise seems pretty weird and it's a measurement artifact. Well, I ran a loop back test WITH the mic cal loaded and all looks good to me?

What do you guys think?

Thanks Neil! I 100% agree with you about Blade II! I remember watching Blade I on VHS in a Pro Logic setup with big Cerwin Vega mains and thinking how incredible some of it sounded.

The Dave, I thought you'd have a little more low end extension with that setup (not that I really know how to read too much into the graph). Don't get me wrong, it still looks great, and I'm sure it SOUNDS incredible, which is the most important thing. Then again, when I graphed my Tempest, I couldn't believe how early it rolled off on paper considering what I was hearing... I thought it was going to bring my house down at some points!

Awwww man! What happened to this thread??? It died.

Dave, I'm working up a design for a pair of the Fi IB 18" and I'm a little constrained on space. I'm trying to find out the dimensions of these bad boys. From your thread I see that you used a 16.75" hole for one boad and an 18.5" hole for the other. The dimension I really need is now long they are. Do you have something that came with them that gives the length of the motor?

Of course if anybody else that has the info, I would much appreciate!

Re: The Dave's Fi IB Quad 18" Build Thread

I was actually about to update it in a little while

I have installed attic insulation and upgraded my wires AND finally hooked up my surrounds!! So I am excited. Anyways, off the top of my head I believe it was 9.75" but I will measure them later and post it.

Re: The Dave's Fi IB Quad 18" Build Thread

Doh...forgot they were in my email. Here are the dimensions:

The subs are 18.500" in OD, the cut ID is 16.750", the flange is approximately .8250" and the depth of the subs from the back mounting flange is 9.500".

Hope that helps! Good luck with the build!! It really helps to measure everything in sketchup and TRIPLE check everything. I changed my design numerous times before I actually cut a single piece of wood.

Dave:

I'm thinking about doing a similar manifold, and I wonder if you wouldn't share your Sketchup file with me? I'm doing 4 x AE 15". I'm particularly interested in how/if you generated the cut sheets from the models, or what the relationship is there.

You can IM me here, or on the cult's board - I have a build thread there. I can't IM here since I haven't posted enough.

Thank you kindly!

Not a problem. Send me your email and I will send it right over. For the cut sheets I just created a new tab and copied the manifold to other tab. Then I set the layer for all the objects to the cut sheet so they were not affected by what I did in the other tab. I m sure there are easier ways to get it done but I am learning the program.

Dave, have you dialed everything in yet? Any new listening impressions, or tricks you've used to get it sounding how you want? I'm glad you got the surrounds hooked up! Has the attic insulation made much of a difference?
