Onkyo HT-R820thx getting hot

Hi, I have a Onkyo HT-R820thx purchased in 2006 that I use for watching perhaps 3-4 movies per week. No issues with the sound or performance. The concern that I have is the receiver gets very hot during usage. By the time the movie is over, the receiver is too hot to touch (I am guessing 130-140 degrees). And there is a faint burnt smell. Just wondering if this is somewhat normal for this particular system, or should I be worried about fire or meltdown. It has always been somewhat hot after use, but it seems to be getting worse. Appreciate any feedback and recommendations on this. Thanks.

Re: Onkyo HT-R820thx getting hot

From what I've read, many Onkyo's from that period have heat issues. I'm not sure how to attack the burnt smell (can't be good), but make sure you have plenty of space on all sides of the unit for ventilation. Consider using a small (computer) fan to aide in heat removal. I have an Onkyo pre-pro from around that time, but have never had that problem. Maybe it's mostly the receivers?

Yes it has sufficient ventilation, at least as much is recommended. I am careful to not leave it on when I leave the room, just in case. I was just wondering how hot is "normal" for one of these home theatre receivers, and if there were known safety issues.

I don't know what normal is, but too hot to touch & smelling burnt, is not good. I'd call Onkyo customer support & put a fan on it to aid in cooling.
