Convergence Problem???

I have a 4.5 year old Hitachi 53fdx20b. I am having some picture problems. On the right half and across the whole bottom 6 inches, there is a red ghost shadow to everything. Am i right in assuming it's a convergence issue? I read your posts (which are great) and belive i need a repair kit X480297. Is this the right part? All the links you supplied of distributors that carry this dont have a description of what is included. Would this be all i need? Is repair easy? Please help with any advice. Thank you for everything.

Re: Convergence Problem???

There is no way for anyone to know if this is all that you need. You could have problems in other areas such as the DCU. The reasonable service procedure at this point would be to replace the chips and resistors, align the set, and find out if that solves the problem. Be sure to verify that the resistors are the correct ones for your set. The kit comes with a sheet that specifies the model number. I believe the info I posted to be correct, but you should verify with the distributor that this is the correct kit for your set and verify it again with the info that Hitachi provides in the package.

Re: Convergence Problem???

I have ordered the parts. I am gonna attempt to repair this myself. How would i find out about how to align the set? All i have is "magic focus". Is there some other way, like a setup menu i can access, or will the magic focus be fine?

Basic and generic Hitachi info is available at
http://www.bruzziforum.com/vbf/showthread.php?t=31 and on HDTVoice.com forums. To be sure that you have the complete and correct info for your set you need the service manual from Hitachi.

Re: Convergence Problem???

I am not too much of the soldering type. Is it ok for me to just replace the chips and not the resistors, or do they have to be done together? I was thinking of trying the chips only first, then if that doesn't work try the resistors. Also, do i need to replace all the resistors or is there a way to tell which ones are bad? Thanks for all your help.

Re: Convergence Problem???

You need to replace the resistors that show any heat damage or are open. You do not need to replace them all.

Re: Convergence Problem???

Hitachi is one of the few that has open support to any shop that registers with them. Just ask if they are registered on the Hitachi site. If they don't know are are confused by the question, go somewhere else.

Did you change the ICs? Perhaps you missed a resistor or forgot to connect something?

Re: Convergence Problem???

I have a Hitachi 53-inch TV model 53FXD20B and read these postings to help me solve my convergence problem. My set worked well until one day the red convergence went way out such that the edges of the screen about 1/3 in were highly offset from the other two colors.

I ordered the repair kit X480297 repair kit for the TV's JT22054 convergence board. It can be ordered locally through a TV repair shop for about $79 and for about half that online. I purchased online through encompassparts. The kit arrived in less than a week and included two integrated circuits and about a half dozen resistors. The kit came with a picture of the convergence board with labels on each resistor and IC to be switch out.

I took off the back panel of my TV and found the convergence board was on the far right. It had 6 plug connectors into the top of the board and 3 edge connectors to jumper the board to the next board. I labeled all the connectors and removed them carefully. There are two screws holding the board down on the edge and one screw in the center (which was hard to find) Once you remove the screws the board came out fairly easily.

Once out, the board was easy to work with. Soldering the new IC with about 20 pins each looked too difficult to do with my simple tools and soldering iron, so I asked a local TV repair shop if they would it. They did for $35 and completed it within a day. This was SO worth it to avoid the hassle. The TV technician stated that the resistor values were different than the originals, so it must be an upgrade. He replaced all the parts on the board with the kitted parts.

I reinstalled the board in about 10 minutes. The TV convergence worked instantly and perfectly. The Magic Focus button doesn't seem to work anymore and is not needed because the convergence is always perfect. I think this must be part of the upgrade. In summary, the kit works, and I was able to fix the TV for under $100. I appreciate the prior posts that have me the confidence to give this a try. I hope this post is helpful to others. Good luck!
