The technosphere was abuzz over the long holiday weekend with speculation surrounding the announcement of an Apple press event to be held on September 12, which takes place on the opening day of Apple Expo 2006 in Paris. Electronista says this is significant since Apple previously said it would not open the Expo with a keynote address (where Steve Jobs typically brings out the goodies). Gizmodo floats the balloon of launching "the new, proper video iPod, while some more adventurous people might mention 'iPhone' in the same breath." And Engadget notes that "the predominant rumor going around right now is the iTunes Music Store movie support." Macworld's Daily News adds more fuel to Engadget's fire, reporting that Businessweek is "claiming that movies will cost $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older films." And Studio Briefing at IMDB adds another wrinkle to the saga:
"Wal-Mart, which claims that its stores account for 40 percent of all DVD's sold in the U.S., has been using its clout to dissuade Hollywood's major studios from cooperating with Apple's iTunes Music Store, which plans to sell them online. According to Business Week, Wal-Mart has sent executives to Hollywood in hopes of blocking any deal between Apple and the studios. Wal-Mart has denied the report."
